I want to post this mostly to share with Luis. I painted it gray primer just so you could see the quality of the print. I'm sending this to Shapeways tonight so they can see how poor their print is. This has nothing to do with Luis' drawing. It's all in the printing at Shapeways.

As I mentioned, sanding is hopeless. I tried on one of them and there was no improvement. This stuff is very strong but even if you get past the roughness, by the time you smoothed it out (if you can) there would be nothing left of it because it is so porous.

So don't buy any of these until we get some feedback from Shapeways. Let's see what they can do with it. Wish me luck. :-)

Hi Dave:

Yes, not the best part that shapeways ever printed.

Sure they are using worse machines for big models. That's a shame.

Anyway, If I had to work "againts" this model, I will try with alternating light sanding+varnishing layers. This material is porous as wood.

As I said, can't be done in polishing material due to overall size, and frosted ultra detail material (hard and brittle) is unable to allow adapt it to the deck curved surface.

So sorry, best regards

Luis

Hi Luis,
Thanks for being so supportive. You've been great to work with and Shapeways has been as well. We're very lucky to have you, Jeff, Patrick, and Steve supporting the models we're working on.

In the case of these foot/toe rails your model was a good and well thought out effort but I don't think this is a good option. I think a better solution is either scratch building as Capt Spears did or perhaps laser cutting hardwood.

Again, I appreciate all of the PT Boat parts you're putting out for us in FUD and FED materials and I hope you continue to support us. But as we discussed I would recommend pulling this particular part until a better 3D printing option comes along.

Take care
Dave

Yeah, I had the same result with the ones I ordered also. I decided to use my scratch built rails instead. I am not going to complain to Shapeways about this and as you said this is on Shapeways not Luis.

These foot rails and other 3D printed PT products are available from Shapeways:

https://www.shapeways.com/search?q=PT+Boat&type=

I could drop a bundle at this site!

Wow! Good job, Luis. One 1/72nd scale SCR-517A setup ordered.

I'd love to see some of our master modelers put one of these babies on one (or more) of the bigger scale 80' Elco models.

Thanks, Drew!

I hope you like it.
I've put many hours on it. It's difficult to find all details from only a few of pictures, but I think the resulting model will work.

Best regards

Luis
