United States Navy's Bureau of Ships (BuShips) was disbanded sometime in the sixty's and was replaced by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). All World War II recorded were sent to the National archives, where they maintain a section for all BuBhips. Ship/Boat plans are located in Series RG-19

If your looking for a particular drawing from the millions of records they have, it is very unlikely. Unless you catch a flight to the archives and do the research yourself.

Check this link:

Then see Gene's PT-King site about research:

H. fan;
Nice photo of the BXB Gen. Those pulleys sure look like the pulleys on my air compressor in my garage, I currently use it to inflate car and bike tires, and footballs and basketballs, But, I also used it to paint my 1970 Olds Delta 88 Convertible in the 1980's.
Anyway, my Grandfather, acutally built this air compressor in the late 1920' or early 1930's from parts he found in the Sears Roebuck catolog. I wonder if this is a Briggs and Stratton produced Generator?????
Just an Idea.
Take care,
TED

I have been told by a Briggs and Stratton collector that B&S built air-cooled engines only. He felt it might have Briggs parts but I have nothing on paper. Those pulleys poser a water pump and I believe a bilge pump.

Hi Higgins Fan,
Looking at the Drawings it shows that the Gen Set was cooled using "Raw Sea Water" If the outer caseing was an alloy casting its life span would have been fairly short and once removed from its mounting and allowed to sit for any length of time would only speed the breakdown of the case. this may be one of the reasons they are hard to find.

I agree David, I also believe there is someone out there with one.

The 305 was installed with 2 generators, and the second one I was able to acquire a Capital Motors 5.5kw in brand new condition. These and the US Motors version were sold en-mass as surplus after the war. They were likely to be used as portable welding units and to power hunting or fishing camps.

The 5.5kw also ran raw sea water which shortens equipment lifetime. Therefore the restoration team will use fresh water cooling for the new engines for they are too valuable to waste.

I imagine the auxiliary units were considered consumable by the Navy. But vital to the crew, I have heard accounts of the generator units were swapped out to various boats to be mission ready.

I have also read that the Boats would move various equipment around to make Boats able to go out on Patrol picking up items from Boats to damaged to Patrol or going in for overhaul.

This went on until the Boats had greater support arranged for them in the combat zone.

I have just finished the book They Were Expendable again and the one thing that keeps comimg up is the lack of spare partis for the Boats, this extended well into the time of the 80'-78' boats and took a fair while to address.

So all one can say is good hunting and with a little bit of luck one will show up.

Fan

I have passed along the photo and specs for the generator you are looking for to some of my small engine guys. Several of them belong to a few of the antique motor clubs in our area, so maybe we will get lucky.

Thank you guys!

I penned an article in Gas Engine Magazine (www.gasenginemagazine.com) and submitted it last week. This periodical will publish an edited version of my write-up regarding my search for the US Motors generator set. I've been asked to write a piece about the Packards for them. I probably will get started on in March.

There were 1,200 of these 2.5kw generators produced by US Motors.
