I bought some of these toe rails as well to see how they were. They were pretty cheap so why not. I've been having a conversation with Luis that the white flexible plastic is of such poor quality that it's unusable. This material is such that you can't really sand it to fix the problem. Luis gave me some suggestions on working with Shapeways and I'm going to try it but I don't expect a positive outcome. Luis is also adding a note about the material to his site. A printed version would be nice but as mentioned already they are easy to scratch build. I'll post an update later on how this comes out.

Someone needs to make the SCR-517A ''Beehive" radar dome and it's support legs, in all the various scales.
I've only seen this item modeled (scratch-built) on a couple of models over the years
It would seem to me that the subtle cloth cover texture and the ribs underneath of the SCR-517A's dome could be well-rendered with the CAD design & manufacturing process.

All I can say is that you need to reach out to the people who make these things and convince them that it's a good, viable, project.
Beehive radar is a good candidate for 3D printing. Best guys out there are our own Jeff Davidson, Luis (aka HOLDEN8702ND), and Model Monkey on Shapeways. There's also some 3D designers outside Shapeways who will make them for you. Provide them with some good plans and pictures and open up your wallets. They'll design and build them for you.
As far as the 77' Elco and for that matter the Higgins boat go, the two most likely candidates are Italeri and Merit. I know I've written them both and expressed interest and support but it's going to take a big effort to get that done. Reach out to those companies and let them know what you would like. They do listen.
These last few years have delivered more Coastal Forces subjects than we've ever seen. I think there's a good possibility we could see these kits.

Hi.
I could work on it, this would be a good asset to my varied range of PT Radar Mast available in shapeways.
But I only have three pictures of this SCR-517A ''Beehive" Radar, and these aren't the best to start a serious project.
Please make an small search and contact me.
Thanks and best regards
Luis

Luis;
As can be seen in these photos Dick has provided, the SC-517 RADAR mounting utilizes the original non radar mast. When installed the entire non radar mast was present. Some crews, like 155, cut the mast at the first cross member, later on out in the warzone. Nice Shapeways project, I look forward to seeing the finished result.
Take care,

As I mentioned in one of the posts on the older thread Dick provided a link to, the only good top view of the SCR-517A's radar dome I've ever seen is a photograph of PT 143's, on page 21 of Victor Chun's "American PT Boats In World War II."
Unfortunately, I don't have the capability to scan or post the photo at this time, but hopefully someone on the Forum will be able to do so.
There are several good front and side photos of the SCR-517A around, but the one in Victor's first book is the only overhead top-view of the unit I've seen, which I would think would be essential for a complete CAD rendering.

Drew;
Here you go.
PT 68 and PT 143 on S.S. Stanvac Capetown.
Take care,
TED
P.S. BTW, the photo credit in Victor's book is Bill Quinby, he was Skipper of PT 68, when the photo was taken.
Smaller photo, but here is S.S.Stanvac Capetown with six RON 8 boats onboard, including PT 68 and PT 143, foreword), enroute to Brisbane, DEC 1942. |
