Some of these items are in Charlie Jones new book. That old building with the rusted sides would make a great PT BOAT MUSEUM. Anyone have any connections with the land owners at Melville.

Frank;
What is the size of that building? 100'x40'? what is the size of the rear portion? That can be your museum and sometime larger can be placed inside the Quonset hut portion????
Take care,
TED
P.S. my suggestion on the ownership question is give Melville Grill a call, maybe they have some contact numbers for that end of the marina.

The owners are New England Boatworks. They still use those buildings. The Qonset is a 100x40, the back building is about the same.
The building are in pretty rough shape. WHen they had the fire that took out some of the waterfront warehouses, when they (people that work there) heard there was a fire, they assumed it was this one. Maybe they were hoping it was this one!

I know. Those old Quonset style huts are wonderful pieces of History, but if not taken care of, forget it. It would be a DREAM to have my Exhibit there, as well as my PACKARD ENGINE, but I do not have the kind of money needed to fix that building, and from the looks of it, I would guess it would need plenty of work. One of the Quonset huts on the main concrete roadway would also be a DREAM. I can only imagine painting one of the huts GREEN and looking out over the Basin, a sign saying MOSQUITO FLEET EXHIBIT, having people come in to learn the history of the boats and MTBSTC. I have learned though from experience, that just because I love PT BOATS, does not mean others do, so getting one of those buildings would be a long shot at best. Maybe I will call up New England Boat Works, and send them a proposal. You never know unless you ask........................

I did manage to speak with Mr. Robert Sharkey this morning from New England Boat Works. He handles many things for the owners, and I decided to run my proposal by him about the possibility of a PT BOAT EXHIBIT on site. As suspected, all of the buildings and space at the old MTBSTC is being used, although he liked the idea. I will now send a proposal letter to Mr. Tom Rich, one of the owners of the Marina. You never know, maybe one day it could be possible. I think it certainly would be a plus to the area, but then again anything pertaining to PT BOATS has my vote.............

Frank;
If the building is named a National Historical site, can't you apply for a Government restoration grant? National Historic Preservation Act
Take care,

Imagine my surprise when I saw this old thread getting new legs!
Great idea Frank...it would be a fitting place for another PT museum/exhibit... the work to get it into a historic building like that would be daunting though.

I think you are correct. Being so far away from Melville (roughly 2.5 hours) would mean traveling back and forth to do business. I do not have that kind of time, and it would take an incredible about of my time, resources, not to mention money I do not have to get into this type venture. Maybe when I hit the lottery before September I can really move forward on these plans. I still have the letter drafted to be mailed out, so I am curious as to what they will say.

Maybe a static display mounted behind lucite that could be left with minimal security and no staffing?
