One thing seems certain, and I think it's mentioned quite clearly in one of those PT manuals we've seen posted online -- constant painting was considered the best sealant/preservative for the wooden boats.

Most of the PTs seemed to have been repainted numerous times, even in different colors and schemes (duhh!) during their service lives. It's obvious from the photos we've seen that would also go for their numbers, nicknames, and caricatures too.

I think you are right, Drew. Plus there are numerous accounts of touchup being done with swabs, etc. which wouldn't lend themselves to very good detail painting.

Wow;
I never saw the Bugs Bunny before, I don't think it was in the film. This has to be later like 44-45. I am not sure, but i think if Dick flips it it looks like BUSTO or GUSTO is painted next to Superman. Was BUSTO a 1940's comic book term for a punch???
Just some thoughts.
Take care,
TED

Wonder if that could be Capt. Marvel with a lightning bolt on his chest. Did a quick internet search of 40's superheros, but didn't turn up anything...

This spring, when I was at the National Archives, I was very surprised to learn that my father was the original captain of PT-156. He held this position for 12 days before he became boat captain of PT-154. There seems to have been a lot of moving around in NYC and Panama.
