PT 156 had the name "Cowboy" painted on it. Does anyone have any information or pictures showing where the name was painted on, and in what color?

STEVE;
PT 156, is on the color video that Dick posted on you tube, you can't see the name, but what looks like Superman is painted on the forward cabin below the number.
Take care,

Steve: I have a couple of shots of the 156 with maybe Bugs Bunny holding what looks like a polka-dotted carrot (go figure). This is on the portside curved splinter shield. Definately don't see anything suggesting the name COWBOY.

Wayne Traxel posted this on an earlier message. Think this is the image Will is refering to.

Gary: Yes, that is one of the two shots. I'll see if I can dig up the other one and post it.

There seem to be four vertical, crudely-rendered letters below the "Superman" figure's left hand on the 156's charthouse in the color footage/screen capture. Can't make out the top two, but the bottom two letters look like a "T" and a "D."
Don't know what any of that had to do with Superman, Cowboy, or that wacky wabbitt Bugs Bunny...

One thing seems certain, and I think it's mentioned quite clearly in one of those PT manuals we've seen posted online -- constant painting was considered the best sealant/preservative for the wooden boats.
Most of the PTs seemed to have been repainted numerous times, even in different colors and schemes (duhh!) during their service lives. It's obvious from the photos we've seen that would also go for their numbers, nicknames, and caricatures too.

I think you are right, Drew. Plus there are numerous accounts of touchup being done with swabs, etc. which wouldn't lend themselves to very good detail painting.

Wow;
I never saw the Bugs Bunny before, I don't think it was in the film. This has to be later like 44-45. I am not sure, but i think if Dick flips it it looks like BUSTO or GUSTO is painted next to Superman. Was BUSTO a 1940's comic book term for a punch???
Just some thoughts.
Take care,

Wonder if that could be Capt. Marvel with a lightning bolt on his chest. Did a quick internet search of 40's superheros, but didn't turn up anything...

This spring, when I was at the National Archives, I was very surprised to learn that my father was the original captain of PT-156. He held this position for 12 days before he became boat captain of PT-154. There seems to have been a lot of moving around in NYC and Panama.

Well dip me in stuff and fly me for a flag!!!
That's the very first document we've ever seen with Dads name on it from the 156 boat!! Hot damn!
Can't thank you enough Nathaniel!!!! Looks like we're connected pretty solidly to the 156 boat after all.
Gratefully,

This makes your dad a member of the original crew! "Krogh" was written in my dad's handwriting. It must have be finished with Ensign Hammer's handwriting.

Yep, I knew Dad was original 156 crew but we had not seen any documentation showing that.
Are you doing your National Archives searches on-line Nathaniel, or do you go to D.C. or what?
Thanks,
Pete

I have had the chance to spend two days at the National Archives (twice now ...both in April). I bring a little camera and a tripod and have fun.
