I have located some more photographs of the developmental ELCO Thunderbolt mounts. These include the prototype built to the original design submitted for coverage by a US patent. Interesting stuff.

Thanks for posting those photos, Bill. It's certainly an interesting gun platform.

These were the photos the Naval War College scanned. When you go there, they no longer let you scan anything, and they limit your number of scan requests. These are all Army prototype Elco mounts, and not the maritime versions. The A-8 (second thru sixth) was the first Elco Turret. Elco did do a quick photo shoot of this A-8 turret carefully placed on PT-157, but it was never mounted. Elco then converted/rebuilt the A-8 mount to the A-5 mount (three 20mm and two .50s – none of these photos show this turret, they’re another group). This was about the same time as the B-6 mount built and tested on PT-160. They then built two C-6 (all the other photos) and got the Army to lend them a White Half-Track (the other turret was mounted on the Elco test truck '37 GMC COE). Tests were conducted out on Ft Hancock.

Andy,
Thank you for the Thunderbolt model definition. Two photographs of the A-8 mount sitting on PT 157.
