PT-108 Officers. ENS. (later Lt. (j.g.) Sidney D. Hix, USNR, skipper of PT 108 RON 5, on right. A 1942 graduate of Vanderbilt University, LT(j.g.) Hix died of wounds received during the ill-fated Daylight strike on Webster Cove, Kolombangara Island 22 Aug 1943. To his left, is Ens. John D. Chester, USNR then Executive Officer of PT 108 RON 5. ENS. Chester went out on PT 44 as 3rd Officer/observer, and was killed along with PT 44 Skipper LT Frank Freeland and 7 enlisted men, when the boat was struck by two shells from a Japanese Destroyer, 12 Dec 1942. This photo is taken aboard SS Joseph Stanton, en-route to Panama, August 1942.

Ens John Chester was also the XO of PT109 during the trip to Rendova from Panama on the Stanton? He was V7 classmate of Bryant Larson. Chester was moved by Rollin Westholm Squadron Commander over to PT44 soon after PT109 arrived in Tulagi. All of this can be gleaned from Bryant Larsons memiors posted here on this Forum. See page 3 and 7 for exact passages referring to Chester.
