Quick Question - Did PT crews / lists change often?

Like many who find a relative who served in a PT boat one of the first questions is What boat did he serve on? And the same is for me. But the answer, I see can be a difficult one. My Great Uncle Steve Jacobowski was assigned to Ron 21. I found during his time Ron 21 consisted of PT boats 320-331. So I was thinking maybe I could find what boat he was on by process of elimination.

I found a photo of crew list for PT 323 on navsource.org listing the names of people attached to the 323. My G. Uncle was not listed as being on that boat.

Would it be safe to assume I can count him not serving on the 323 and move on to the other 11 boats assigned to Ron 21at that time?

You all are the ones who would know, so what do you think?

George

Usually, they were assigned to a boat and stayed there. And there were times when they may ride another boat for a patrol because someone is sick or something and they needed someone to fill in. So yes, you'd have to go through the logs to find him on one of the boats.

Hey George, on a side note...I see on the muster reports that Steve Jacobowski enlisted in Huntington, WVA. My parents grew up there.

Charlie,

Thank you for replying to my post. That's what I was thinking I'll have to locate the ship crew rosters for each boat... somewhere. But on the bright side I always learn so much more when I have to search for the answers. I have already learn so much here and seen so many great photos.

My G. Uncle Steve was a coal miner from Scarbro, WVa. Thinking he may have gone to Huntington to enlist in the USNR. just a guess.
Again , thanks for chiming in Charlie

The good news is that the boat logs for the RON 21 boats are located at the National Archives in College Park MD. Where are you located?

That is great information! thanks Charlie! I just looked up where College Park MD is. Says just north of DC. My Aunt and Uncle live in Fredricksburg VA. May have to make a visit this fall. Just a hop, skip and a jump from there.
I live in Fayetteville, WV.

Thanks again Charlie!

I get out to the archives every now and again. Next trip, I'll see what I can find. May be a couple of weeks, though.
