Hallo everyone, for my ongoing pt195 project I am looking for pictures/diagrams/written descriptions of the area where the propeller shafts exit the hull. On the elco blueprints collection there is ample reference of the hull inside at this spot but I couldn't find anything about the outside yet.

Personally I don't think that the hull planking simply butted against the shafts, there should be some sort of fairing.
Can anybody spring to the rescue?

Hi Daniele, try page 141 between page 143+145?( anyway that's what it looks like to me may be the illustration No.!) An illustration in the Elco parts catalog on the Free Plans Page of this site listed under Stern Tube Assy.

Thanks a lot David, but those are the shaft guides/watertight collars located inside the engine room, I'm looking for the outside detail.

As far as I can tell the prop shafts came right out of the hull. Check out ELCO_Roll_5535-3_72SCAN_00265.pdf + 00264, prop shaft locations. The outboard profile also shows no fittings at the hull exits. See also the hull bottom blocking drawings.
Some of the later boats moved the forward strut farther fwd, to the prop shafts hull exit. See ELCO_Roll_5535-3_72SCAN_00312.pdf + 00313.

Finding pictures of what you're looking for is tough. In most pictures I've seen the cradle blocks the view. I got these from the Battleship Cove site. It backs up what Jeff is saying. It looks like the outboard shafts exit through a tube with no hardware around the exit point. However the center shaft looks a little different, like there's some sort of build up around the exit point which makes sense because of the centerline shape. Unfortunately it's not very clear. You may want to contact Battleship Cove and ask if they would provide a better photo for you. If you get one please share it with us. :-)

Yes, after digging into the engineers hand book in the doc page it appears that the watertight seal in the Elco called a syntron seal was located inside the hull. I suppose that means that little was needed outside the hull as the stern tube assembly inside supported the shaft, the photos do seem to show a support in this area and one would think that such a support would have been added to stop any splintering of the hull around the shaft hole. But it does not appear to have any hardware in it to support the shaft.
Interesting to see that such an important area has so little known about it!

Well guys thanks to everyone who took time to search for info. Too bad David W's pictures refer to a later boat, with the front struts half buried in the hull planking. I'll go for the planking butting the shafts and a double row of washers/nuts correspondig to the inner collars base plates.. The keel protection strip in the area will also require some artistic license....
