Yeah, some scumbag broke open the door to our boathouse with a crowbar. They took a lot of hand tools and portable power tools worth about $6000! I lost my personal hand held power planer that I let the boat boorow and Bob Alton lost about 6 or 7 power tools. They also took some new Craftsman Ratchet sets and lots of stuff easily carried. We are still able to work on the boat, but the theft has delayed progress a bit! We will continue our efforts in spite of the setbacks, similar to how the WW2 PT boaters would have done the same thing. Thanks for posting the story. Jerry

Sorry Jerry to hear of this horrible act. I am hoping you guys had insurance on what was stolen. I sure hope they catch these rotten Mutts.

Jerry,
As a former detective, I investigated thousands of thefts...and tons of stolen tools. If the detective there hasn't already suggested it, look at the photos that you guys have taken during the restoration, some of the stolen items may be in the pics as well, maybe identifiable by a paint splotch, scratches, broken parts and so forth. Any items that weren't taken, and the new ones that will come, if they have a serial number, log it in a note- book and also take photos of them. I would also suggest buying a Dremel engraver and mark EVERYTHING! The success rate is low, but I know it was nice when we were looking at a room full of stolen tools that had numbers unique to a victim so they could be returned. Otherwise, they went to auction.

Sorry to hear of some Bas---ds robbing you guys. I also agree with Pat, he gives sound advice, especially the dremel tool, we always engrave our tools, because other boat crews would swipe them!

That's terrible news! Do you guys have insurance to help you? I think you guys have faced your share of adversity. I hope the police can recover the tools.

No our insurance does not cover the theft. Pat, that is a great idea about using past photos. Most of this was small portable stuff, so it is hard to say if we have a photo that shows it. I just completed (this March) an inventory complete with photographs of each item of all of our Historic Artifacts and am in the process of marking them as well, but the tools and other equipment that is not an "Artifiact" has to come second. I was planning on setting up an inventory on those items next, and we do have quite a few to keep track of. At any rate thanks for the idea, and I am already looking for a good engraving tool like you suggest.. We are also improving the hardness of our points of entry and added security for our boathouse too. Jerry PT658

Jerry, one other thing. The last thing intended by the person(s) who stole the tools was to use them for any type of work. They will either be pawned or traded for drugs and then pawned by someone else. The sooner you can get an itemized list copied, and I'm sure Portland has many more pawn shops than my small town, drop a copy to as many shops as you can. While the items may not be unique singularly, someone bringing in multiple items that show up on the list can ring a bell to a shop employee.

I'm with Pat on the local pawn shops -- or certain subjects or places, previously known to police, that have been known to take in stolen work and construction tools...
