I watched the video, and my guess is it is a depth charge, however, noboby appears to be on the stern, which was SOP for RON 1. The planes veiwed up until 1:39 are all SBD's and F4F's most likely from ENTERPRISE prior to ferrying VMF-211to Wake Island in November 1941 or they could be locals assigned to Pearl or Ewa, but I doubt it. The Nevada after 1:39 is very interesting as she has what looks like a false bow wake painted on the bow. The rest of film clip is of course during the attack as we know.
Take care,
p.s. some film photographers (using 16mm or 8mm cameras)would not turn in a roll of film until it was finished, this could be the reason for the apparent delay/time period of the film.

In watching the Film you can certainly see and tell that this boat is picking up speed. I have watched it several times, and it is very tough to see anyone dropping a depth charge from the stern, but it sure looks like a depth charge drop to me...........

I viewed this footage from a Pearl Harbor documentary years ago and was unable to get detailed information on the 77 foot Elco boat. After seeing it again on your post on the Message Board I did a search on the internet and found the information listed below. I have been told by PT Boaters about the use of hand grenades and depth charges for fishing but never thought I would see actual footage of it. I wonder what would happen if the USN tried to fish with depth charges in this day and age!

Information from the internet source NARA:

The "Eric Haakenson" footage is unique in that this was 8mm color film taken from USS Solace, the hospital ship on the starboard quarter from USS Nevada. Haakenson was an Army doctor visiting the ship and took home movies that weekend of harbor activies and the combat action on 6 and 7 Dec. After he filmed the USS Arizona explosion in color, he went to work as a doctor helping casualties.

Here is the NARA detail of what that "Haakenson" film contains:The first part shows SBD;'s doing touch and go's on Ford Island. The camera moves over and you can see the LEXINGTON still moored before her departure on the 5th. A 77 foot ELCO PT boat goes by and drops a depth charge in the East Loch. (they were fishing for fish - not subs), then for three frames of the NEVADA coming in to moor on the 5th. Her painted on bow wave shows. THEN comes the attack: The camera is stopped and started several times during the filming. The scenes you have seen over the years is all the footage. The whole series on the 7th is only 418 frames. That is not much screen time. At that point, I imagine the doctor got called away to other duties. It picks up again on the 8th. You can see the USS RALEIGH (CL-7) listing at her moorings (distance view, remember the SOLACE changed her moorings) and the USS NORTHAMPTON (CA-26) sails past with an oiler. End of reel.
