Hi there.

Did any PT boat using depth charges sink a sub or destroyer? I see images of PT boats with many depth charges. I have put eight on my 1/32 scale Lindberg PT boat I am rebuilding. Now I wonder if any PT boat using its depth charges actualy sank an enemy destroyer or sub.

Do any of you know of a case where such happened?

Peter, I have researched this same question and as near as I can tell from reading the book At Close Quarters, by Captain Robert J. Bulkley, Jr., USNR (Ret) which is the well-known comprehensive historical account of the squadrons, bases and tenders, 576 pages which include photographs and maps. It appears that the only submarines sunk by PT boats were by using torpedoes. I know the book tells of one such incident by PT 150 off New Guinea.

Here are a few others:
On December 9, 1942, PT 59 torpedoed and sank IJN submarine I-3 at Kamimbo Bay, Guadalcanal.

On December 24/25, 1942, PT 122 apparently torpedoed and sank IJN submarine I-22 at Tufi, New Guinea, though recent investigations cast doubt on that assessment.

Hi Jerry.

Thank you for that information. It is ironic that submarines were sunk by surface craft using torpedoes.
