http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=995

Since we're all WWII PT buffs (and veterans) here, I thought this information might be of interest to everyone, if they're not already aware of it, particularly since T. Garth has asked for sources of color PT boat photos in the recent past.

I found this site when searching on the computer for PT photos. It's the National Archives Color Slide Naval Collection, and it has hundreds and hundreds of mostly World War II (and some Korean War-era) U.S. Navy color photos on it, with many PT boat pictures included. The Archives are in the process of downloading their entire 14,000 Navy photo collection onto the internet, or so the site states. The web address that shows up is:

[url]http://www.historylink101.com/ww2_navy/archive/index.html[/url]

You can also Google "Naval Archive Pictures From World War II" or "National Archives Color Slide Naval Collection."

The site has many series' of photos, listed in numbered groups, about 20 to 25 per group, which when you click on the number groups all the photos come up as "thumbnails," which of course can then be clicked on to bring up individually. An irritating distraction, which becomes evident after viewing just a few of the photos, is that most, if not all, of the photos have been "flipped," or reversed when posted by the Archives-- they're backwards, "mirror" images!

The PT photos are scattered willy-nilly, with no rhyme or reason, (as are most of the subjects), among all the hundreds of photos. It would take many, many hours of searching and opening the groups to find all the PT photos, but here are some of the catalog numbers of photos and groups with (mostly gray) PTs in them I found:

#1250-1299 (two photos of Ron 9's CO Robert B. Kelly, observing from the cockpit of a gray 103-class 80' Elco).

#13627 (the starboard turret and cockpit of what I think is a gray PT 107, based on other photos I've seen of her with the same helmet-liner wearing cockpit crew and binocular cases on top of the the dashboard at the base of the windshield).

#3900-3999 (four photos of an 80' Elco underway).

#4300-4349 (a photo of a crewman painting kill marks on PT 134's outboard port cockpit, taken at the same time the photo on page 145 of Frank D. Johnson's "United States PT-Boats of World War II In Action" was taken -- the boat numbers were red, with white shading!, and an 80' Elco's port turret, one without gun-limit railing).

#6650-6699 (two photos of a 78' Higgins launching Mark XIII torpedoes off roll-off racks).

#13597 (a 103-class 80' Elco underway).

#13600-13649 (an 80' Elco underway, the starboard turret, and stern 20mm on an 80' Elco, and a PT crewman with belted .50 cal ammo [and a good look at the painted settings on the end of a depth charge next to him]).

#14050-14099 (a 78' Higgins underway).

#14117 (a cheery Rosie the Riveter screwing a plate on the warhead of a torpedo -- can't tell if its a Mark VIII or a XIII).

#14150-14199 (a 78' Higgins underway).

#14517 (an 80' Elco's starboard turret, taken from just abaft the curved splash shield).

#16150-16199 (four light gray 78' Higgins', moored side-by-side).

Anyway, those will give you a start -- as I said, there are more, but they are scattered all through the site's photo groups.

Drew,

Hi. Do you think you could possibly scan those and email them to me?

T. Garth,

I wish I could, but scanning and sending images is beyond my capacity/computer knowledge at this point... I DID capture several of the PT images I wanted to keep in the "Pictures" file on my computer...if I ever figure how to scan/send them, I'll gladly send them off to you.

I used to be able to email images with my old computer, but I haven't figured out how to do that on this new HP one...that function isn't very "user-friendly"...

You should be able to access the photos by going to the site, then saving them by right-clicking on them and clicking "Save Picure As" to your file(s)... Remember, as I said, those PT photos are all reversed, or "flipped"...

Thanks for the I.D.s of the photos, Ted.

The only reason I mentioned the Kelly photos might be on Ron 5 boats is I thought they may have been taken at the same time as the series of (b&w) photos of the 107 most of us are familiar with (I've seen the series on Gene Kirkland's PT King website), and the reason I say that is there's a color photo elsewhere on that Nat'l Archives website of an 80' Elco's (in the exact same gray paint) starboard turret and a slice of her charthouse & cockpit that's a dead ringer -- guys in helmet liners w/chinstraps and binocular cases on the ledge under the windshield -- for the 107 in the b&w photo series.

It would make more sense, of course, for the boat Kelly's on to belong to his Ron 9 (obviously, in its original configuration in the photo).

Maybe a Ron 9 expert can I.D. the officer at the wheel...?

I hope you guys don't mind but I wanted to post some of these great shots from the National Archive. There are more on the Photobucket site.

They also make great wallpaper for your desktop.

I tried to clean up the two pictures of Robert Kelly. Pictures of him are hard to come by. I hope no one minds the double post. I am interested in Ron 9. I can add a little info to the mystery. Thanks Ted for adding your knowledge to Drew's (for me) great discovery.

PT-156 (Lt.(jg) Rex L. Anderson was CO in July 1944)
PT-158 (grounded off Munda Point July 5, 1943)
PT-159 (Hank Brantingham) Hank looks very different. In the picture below, my father, Hamlin Smith is on the left. Next to him is William Carter (Pat Rogers helped me identify him). Hank may be on the far right. The insert has been identified as Lt. Henry J. Brantingham.

Drew,

Yes, thanks ... I noticed that myself. I saved a few too. A very interesting site to say the least ... I saw and saved a few photos of SCs and two of a recovered sunken S-100 Class Schnellboot.

I've emailed the guy too.

Gary,

Thanks for posting those National Archive photos. Can you post the other one of Robert B. Kelly standing at the rear of the 80' Elco cockpit? I think that gray slab at the bottom of the photo is the top of one of those airfoils we were talking about a while ago...

Garth,

I was very interested by the photos, too, and the actual colors of many things military-related I had been looking at for years in black & white...

For instance, I learned that some Navy UDT frogmen's masks and fins were green, not black as I had supposed they all were...

Can I ask a question?

There were a few shots of a trio of men on deck of some vessel looking at a chart or a map. There was a causcasian guy in fatigues, a USN officer that looked of Japanese descent and what looked like a bearded Japanese civilian.

Is that a PT? I see twin 50s behind them. Could that be one of the boats that was handed over to the ROK?

Drew

I can't thank you enough for bringing this to our attention. I spent the last hour going thru the numbers and it is a wonderful collection of color photo's. There is something for everyone, planes, ships, Islands. boats, you name it and they have it. Some of the photo's are an awesome look into WWII.

Modelers can really appreciate this site, because it shows true colors of Aircraft and Ships, as well as Buildings, and uniforms. The site offers many differnt looks into the Navy uniforms of the day. Of course, the PT Boats offered show some really nice shots as well. If you have the time, it is well worth it to sift thru this stuff. My son, who dresses as a WWII Fighter Pilot for Air Shows, found some really great color shots of Pilots in their Fighter gear. Take the time gang, it's worth it. Lots of shots of the forward bases in the Pacific...................

Frank,

You are certainly welcome! I'm glad I could contribute this bit of info for those who weren't aware of it before (such as myself).

I got a kick out of seeing all those neat Kodachrome color photos of some of the "personalities" -- our current Republican presidential candidate's grandfather, Admiral "Popeye" McCain (#13518), Lieutenant Henry Fonda (#6235), and Lt. (j.g.) Gene Kelly (#6027), as well as Jimmy Thatch in both dress khaki and flight gear, Butch O'Hare, etc.,etc

The Archives needs a knowledgeable volunteer to go through those photos, post the correct captions, and group them together by subject (as well as flip them back the right way!).

I managed to grab all of the PT BOAT SHOTS that were on the archives page. There are a couple of photo's that are the same, but if you look are reversed. I had them made into 5x7 photo's ( done by Walgreens ) and they look great. As Dick told me, most of the photo's have a blue tiint to them, but look awesome on the reprint. It's worth it to have them enlarged, so once again Drew THANKS MANY TIMES OVER!!!!

Photo of Rex Anderson at the helm of PT-156 taken in June 1944. directly behind Rex is Lt. Micheal Pessolano who was Ron 9's Squadron Commander from January to August 1944. Lt. Pessolano later died aboard USS Indianapolis, late July 1945.

Just a follow-up on Jim’s (newsnerd99) remarks [b]“They do clean up well...with more effort they'd really shine (get rid of the hairs, etc.)”[/b].

Below is a sample of the before and after of one of Jim’s posted photos that I open in Photoshop and spent about 5 minutes on, but not more then 10 minutes at the very most. It shows just how some of these images can really pop . . . . with very little work.

[b][red]BEFORE:[/red][/b]
[image]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p249/ptboats/Webmaster/6803-1.jpg[/image]

[b][red]AFTER:[/red][/b]
[image]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p249/ptboats/Webmaster/6803.jpg[/image]

However these are for web posting and viewing only . . . making an actual photographic photo print might cause the image to blow-out and not print very well . . . some testing would have to be made.

Dick . . . .

WAYNE . . . Great shot of PT-156 , a nice showing of the modifiedd 20mm turret - Thanks, Dick. . . . .

Wayne,

Thank you for letting me see my first picture of Michael Pessolano. He pulled his boat along side my father's boat (PT-154) after his boat was hit (November 13/14, 1943). He took the wounded and the dead onto his boat (PT-155) and commanded the damaged boat back to Treasury Island. While the events of that night have been shared with me by Pat Rogers (thank you Pat ... I will treasure your description) and more than one account is out there, I wanted to see a picture of the man in question and I am sorry he met his fate as did almost 900 on the Indianapolis on or after July 30, 1945.

I have seen this picture before but Lt. Michael Pessolano had not been identified.

If you have other pictures of Ron 9 boats ... can you post them or send to me at:
nat@nathanielsmith.com. You identifications are also especially appreciated.

Is this a pair? If so the identity of the skipper no longer a mystery and the boat is PT-156. Look at the skipper and the man to HIS right in each picture.

Hello Nathaniel, You're welcome, I posted this photo earlier in the year in regards to the Mk-12 20mm turret mount. I have a few others that Rex Anderson loaned me to copy back in 1994. I regret to say that one of these photos has been misplaced and it had Lt. Michael Pessolano, the man had a great smile. I'll find, scan, send them to you and post them.

Rex Anderson joined Ron 9 in February 1944 and was a skipper trainee (his words) on PT-157 before assuming command of 156 from March until November of 1944.

Someone asked a while ago (Peter Tare Builder?) what the color of the life rafts on the 80' Elcos were...

The color photo of PT 536 (or 537) in New York harbor that Ted posted should answer that question pretty definitively...

Again ... terrific photos. Sorry my email was down. I think Tropical Storm Kyle shut down my email provider. It is up now. Below are two pictures. You said the two "unknowns" in bottom picture are the same as two in the top picture. Help me ... which two?

I will try to Photoshop "clean-up" some of your photos and I'll post links here (as not to use up a lot of Board space).
Some people like the originals better as they show their true age.

Hello Nathaniel,

Moving Right to Left as you are looking at the photos the guy to the right of Gaddie in my photo resembles the guy on the far left of your photo. But now after seeing the two pictures together I'm not as sure on this one. The build and nose of this guy appears correct but the eyes are a closer together in my photo than in yours.

Right to Left again. The guy on the end or far left of my photo looks like the guy between the two pipe smokers on your photo. This one I'm positive of , eyes, nose, mouth and build appear to match.

What do you think?
