» Topic: Query = Weight of 20mm Magazine?
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=961

Hi there.

I was sure I had this info in my files but I can not find it there or elsewhere on this forum. Perhaps I have simply overlooked it. Could and would some one tell me the approximate weight of a fully loaded 20mm Magazine?

I would think it was 50+ pounds. I want to be sure because I want to realistically pose the 20mm Loader on my model.

Cheers and thanks once again from PeterTareBuilder

Here is site that lists it at 37 pounds, loaded. It says the empty magazine weights 3.2 pounds. It always seem a lot heavier to me when I played with them on the USS NORTH CAROLINA and the SS JOHN W. BROWN.

Found another site that says the magazine (loaded) weighs 61 pound. That one I believe.

PeterTare,
I have personally picked up several of those empty ones to rebuild it and clean them up for display and can vouch that they weigh about 10-15 pounds empty. They consist of basically two end caps with spiral guide channels on the inside, two handles, a rectangular loading port/mounting adapter, a spring loaded follower assembly that pushes the rounds out, and the shell. All of this is made from steel (not aluminum) and is held together end to end by about 8 ten inch long #10 bolts and nuts. Since they hold 60 rounds, I imagine they had to be at least 40 - 50 pounds. Here is a photos and from the looks of the effort he is using to lift the full magazine 50 pounds would be a good bet. Jerry

Hi and thanks Jerry.

That look of effort is *EXACTLY* what I wanted to be sure about. I have some figure heads that will be ideal for this 20mm gun crew.

Cheers from Peter

Hi all.

Here is another shot of a loader placing a 20mm magazine onto the gun. Those gunners sure worked hard.

Peter here are some closeups of one of our 20mm guns with the magazine. I think Frank asked me to photo them last year for modelers to look at. I hope these are useful. Jerry

Hi Jerry.

*A BIG THANK YOU* Jerry!

Those photos are absolutely awesome. The detail I can now do to the 20mm magazines! However that detail will be added to my 1/35 scale Italeri PT-596 model which is not started yet. It is going to be an over-the-winter project. I will be adding the two handles to each of the seven 20mm magazines I have on hand for the 1/32 scale Lindberg PT boat. The 1/32 scale Lindberg 20mm gun is not that bad but it is not really worth the time it would take to detail it that much. But I now look forward to seeing what I can do to the Italeri 20mm guns.

Thank you very much for sharing those photos.

I have pretty much decided on the arnaments for my refurbished and refitted 1/32 scale Lindberg PT boat (not my current on-going build). I am keeping the forard torpedo tubes and the eight depth charges aft of those torpedo tubes. I am also mounting two 20mm ammo lockers aft of each row of four depth charges (like on PT-103) and two more 20mm amo lockers between the engine room deck vents. At least one of these 20mm ammo lockers is going to have the lid open with the 20mm magazines inside. I will be using the kit supplied 20mm gun and pedestal mount for it. I will be thinning the gun shield to a better thiness and adding a couple of braces to the back of it I saw in the attached image.

By the way, on the refurbished PT boat I can now rotate each of the four engine room vents and the chartroom vent to whatever position I want them in. They are used to lock down the deck on my model.

Cheers from PeterTareBuilder
