» Topic: They Truly Were- EXPENDABLE
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=949

The following is taken from the Motor Torpedo Boat Operations Manual:

1210. Every effort must be exerted by motor torpedo boat personnel to obtain the greatest results with actual and potential weapons, which is inflicting maximum damage on the enemy. In no case should a vessel sink with torpedoes or ammunition on board if they can be fired at an enemy.

This makes it pretty clear- you not only go down with your ship (boat) but you go down fighting ! Forget about self-preservation. Expend your ammunition!

Failure to do so was apparently a chargable offense! Tough duty, indeed. Something to ponder.

Amazing but true. They truly were expendable in the Navy's eyes. I wonder if the big brass ever really appreicated the worth of the PT Boat as a fighting weapon. Some thought the boats would only be good as a defensive platform, when in effect, they proved themself's as a good offensive threat in certain conditions.
