ť Topic: Old Revell kit - NOT the 109 or 212

Does anyone remember the rare Revell PT-190 'Jack'O'Diamonds' incarnation of their PT-109 kit from back in the 1960s? I'm looking for photos of (a) the kit itself and (b) a finished kit.

Hello Garth-

Yep, I do remember seeing that kit a very long time ago! I can't remember exactly where it was, it might have been in an old issue of the now defunct Scale Ship Modeler magazine. That is a very rare kit!

My good buddy and PT boat veteran Bruce Hansbury sent me the plans for the 168 boat also by Revell. The box art was very sharp showing a RON-10 boat in zebra stripe camofladge. The instructions sheet showed the model painted and it was the inspiration for my 1/32 scale 169 also in zebra stripes. She was a bear to paint, but worth the effort.

I have to thank you Garth for making that Squadron book on PT's available with the zebra measure PT printed inside. I used that print as a masking pattern for my model.

There is a model shop that still deal with every now and then up in Michigan. The guy who runs the shop is Dean Stills and the name of the shop is DEAN'S HOBBY STOP. You might want to try contacting him. He specializes in out of production and rare kits. He'll even send you a current listing of all his models in stock, just make sure you ask for the military / ships listing. Hope that this helps somewhat!

Is that the one that had the racks instead of the Tubes? There was one on ebay not too long ago...went for big bucks. I searched for it but couldn't find it so it must of been longer than 30 days.

T. Garth, I downloaded a photo of the boxtop off the internet, but I can't figure out how to post it...

Some time ago, I read someone's description of this kit (can't remember where), and they said it was basically just the old 109 kit without the torpedo tubes, with four torpedos that had pegs on them to fit into the holes on the tube bases/pads (in other words, no roll-off racks, no radar mast, etc.).

They commented on the kit's rarity, but said the kit was the standard 109 kit less the tubes and plus the torpedos, with different packaging and decals.

TGC: I have a built-up model of the 190. It is just the 109/117 kit with racks instead of tubes. If you'd like a photo, I'll take one and send it .

Thank you All for answering this post. Your answers made me happy. I've not had much good luck going on in my life since this past April, so little things like this do may me a little happy.

Frank, thank you for those kind words about my IN ACTION book. Just a word of caution; as I've been doing the revamp of that book - I've found some errors in it and that Adaptor Scheme drawing MAY NOT be all that accurate ... but I'm taking steps to put more accurate information in the next edition of that book, especially regarding to Camouflage. I think you guys will be happy with it.

Revell PT-190 was introduced in 1965 and only was in production for a year. The aerial torpedoes on this kit appeared as a torpedo strapped to a plank and fit the torpedo pads that the torpedo tubes would normally fit in. It was also the only PT kit by Revell that did not retain the Kennedy figure. The 1973 Revell issue PT-167 retained the Kennedy figure as Ens. Berlin. And as soon as I brush up on Photobucket I'll include pictures of the disassembled kit.
