Great photos, particularly that close-up of those early, tubular flash hiders on the twin-.50's in the 77' Elco turret.

FYI for the super-detail model-makers who visit this site - those were the type that were on the 109's .50's.

Seconded, thank you very much Frank and Dick. Besides the details, I also love studying the faces to try to get a sense of what life was like back then. It's hard for me to imagine virtually every man and woman in the country participating in the war effort.

The shot with the flash hiders, did Robert Mitchum do some publicity shots for the Navy? Just kidding...

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine, who lives roughly two miles away from the old Melville site. He said it was snowing with awind coming off the water, making it feel about zero degrees. These pictures refelct that type of weather. What can you guys tell us about the training you went through during the winter months, and what is was like at the Base during these cold and snowy days.
