http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=548

Gidday all,Im trying to get together a collection of items that would have been worn or had by members of a MTB Base Force. For starters what is the sleeve patch worn by a F1c
If anyone has photos or knows where i can purchase items for my collection please let me know,i would be very grateful.Thank you in advance,
Im not sure of his rating whilst at MTB Base, on his separation papers his ratings are AS,S2c,F3c,F2c,and F1c then MoMM3c but his last service postings were on LST's.So was he only an MoMM on the LST's.Can anyone help me decipher these ratings?

Thanks Steve,
As a Fireman 1st Class, what would have been his duties at the Base and do you think he would have been on any Boats at any time. Will has sent me some photos of a couple of Bases namely 4 & 6,which were grately appreciated, does anyone else have any pictures of Base Personnel at all.Lots of questions i know but if i dont ask ill never know.Cheers

Michael,

At the beginning of WWII, the Navy had an anomaly in their rating structure for fireman that was confusing. In essence, everyone went into the Navy as an apprentice seaman. Upon completion of recruit training at one of the recruit training center, you were usually sent to a school for more training or straight to the fleet. Some of the sailors were sent to some engineering specialty school and became fireman third class. Now a fireman third class was at the same rating scale as a seaman second class. Their rating progression went from Fireman third, to fireman second to fireman first class; then to PO 2nd class. So in other words, in the artificer (engineering) branch, there were no 3rd class Petty Officers. You didn’t have a Machinist’s Mate 3rd class or a water tender third class, etc. This changed in 1943 (but not effective til January 1944) when they made the rate structure fall in line with the seaman branch and third class petty officers became authorized. They eliminated the fireman third class rating, once they finished recruit training, they would become fireman 2nd class.

So in answer to your original question, as a F/1c, there is no sleeve insignia to indicate a F 1/c, although he would have a 3/8-inch red braid around the left shoulder seam of his dress and undress blues. But he should have a striker mark on his left sleeve between the cuff and elbow of a Motor machinist mate: a propeller with M and O on either side of the propeller.

His duties would be to work on the Packard engines. And maybe on occasion go out on a boat.
