Just curious if anyone can tell me the significance of the 13 painted Japanese Flags in the photo. I know as a rule they are kill flags, but not sure as to which type of kills they are referring to. The photo was taken in Tulagi and is from Ron 3 (2).

Usually, the rising sun represent airplanes shot down, and the meatball with a white surround is a ship sunk. The USS Barb, submarine had a locomotive on their battle flag which was an interesting story. There were other variants though!

On page 100 of Frank Johnson's book "United States P-T Boats of World War II", in the picture caption, he says "one flag for each torpedo hit the squadron claimed"
