ť Topic: Sweetheart Pillows

These are two Sweetheart Pillows that I have. Over the many years I have been involved with the History of the PT BOATS, these are the only two that I have found that deal specifically with the little PT BOATS. Have any of you ever seen others in your travels?

I have seen others that show a PT Boat among other ships, but not specifically a PT Boat pillow. I've never run across the Little Creek one except in your collection.

I thought so Jerry and Charlie. Charlie I have the ones with the PT BOAT mixed with other ships. I guess these two were the only ones they made during WWII

The first pillow is a real mix and match of images! An early PT Boat plus a Curtiss BF2C-1 Goshawk retractable undercarriage biplane, plus a Sikorsky JRS1 amphibious flying boat! The BF2Cs were retired early 1935 after only a few months in service. The Navy retired their last JRS1 in 1939, the Marines retired their last on in 1941, The Army Air Corp retired their last one after it surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, Virginia! Maybe prewar? Cheers, Dennis

Hello Stearman (Dennis),
To me that retractable gear biplane looks like a Grumman F3F fighter plane. The Flying boat to me looks like a "PBY Catalina" with the wingtip floats in the down position for landing. I am guessing the artist who drew the design for the pillow was likely just using images commonly available at the time as something to go by. I think they did not put that much thought into it about whether or not these aircraft were still in use when the pillow was made! The artist/embroiderer just wanted to show a couple of Navy planes in the air, and didn't much need to really be that accurate is my supposition. This is even more apparent when you look at the other generic "airplanes" in the center of the pillow, they are purely stylized and obviously not meant to portray any particular actual aircraft. Yet, if those 2 particular planes that you named were the actual aircraft meant to be depicted I agree that is pretty remarkable! Just making an observation and not trying to say you are incorrect.

If you click on the image, then click again to enlarge it, you will see, the fighter has a squared off tale and a bulge for the wheels to retract, which the Grumman did not have. There is an Grumman F3F just a few miles from me, oh how I wish I could own and fly one! The flying boat has struts holding the floats on, so non retractable. Although, the engines do look closer together then they should be. I have no idea what those other things in the air are? As you said, maybe he had a few postcards, so he just used those for reference. Still a great pillow! Keep up the good work on the 658 boat Jerry, one of these days, I want to get up there for a ride! Cheers, Dennis
