Rare photo donated to my exhibit from the Frederick Bulkeley collection showing Executive Vice President of Elco Henry Sutphen and Mananging Constructor Irwin Chase on the RMS Queen Mary. They were on the way to England at this time to check out the British MTB's. They would test and purchase one of the Scott-Paine boats, PT-9. Sutphen is fourth from the left and Chase fourth from the right.

A great photograph Frank, and very good by-line. I find it very interesting they were heading out for their MTB quest, encouraged and funded by the U.S. government.
As I had later read and with your’s and Al’s correction (well, let’s say “schooling me”), they didn’t buy the original PV70, which was my initial misunderstanding. They actually ended up buying a copy of PV70 which was created by Scott-Paine, and George Selman the top designer for the British Power Boat Company. The PV70 was an acronym for “Private Venture 70-foot” and was Scott-Paine’s plan to market their new design to the British government in hopes of a contract and taking on the Vosper boat design.
Frank has have a great photo of the copy prior to being repainted and designated PT 9. The boat shows the stern view and the designation on the transom is [b]M.T.B. ELCO, New York[/b]. Hopefully Frank will post the photos of the early boat, and the later repainted when the Navy designated the boat as PT 9.
An interesting note: Eco purchased the the boat and all of its tooling. However, unlike the delivery of the boat, the tooling never showed up, and Elco had to start from scratch with their 70-foot PT. Using the the purchased copy of the PV70 as a template and guide.

The last place I thought I would see the Queen Marry! Like thousands of Yanks, my Dad went over on the Queen! Rough trip for a lot of the men. For the trip back home, he was not only the only 9th AAF member, but the only AAF or Army crew member on a tanker. The crew treated him nice, probably because he was going home, because his Dad had died from phnmonia! After the Queen retired to Long Beach, we went to see her, a big moment for him, and me for that matter! Cheers, Dennis
