Hi, My dad passed away 3 years ago but I have been doing some research and found a Muster Roll of the crew saying that he was Motor Boat Squadron, 7th fleet. I also know that on 9/8/45 he was supposed to be transferred to Navy 3149. His name was Robert Francis Morgan. If anyone has information on how I can research this more to figure out which PT boat he was on I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Welcome aboard. PT Boat Squadron 7th Fleet was not a PT boat Squadron, but rather the HQ element, administrative and operations for the MTB Squadrons in the 7th fleet. PT Boaters would report there and then be assigned to a squadron.. Having arrived in October 1945, there really weren't any Squadrons to send your dad to. Navy 3149 is Samar Island, Philippine Islands, which is where they stripped and burned the remaining PT Boats.

OK. He arrived at 7th Fleet from Samar on September 8, 1945. Then was transferred to the Receiving Ship at Subic. Can't find him on Subic R/S yet. I'll see if I can track him down at Samar.

Looks like he went to MTBSTC - the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons Training Center, (Melville, RI) between June and August 1945.. Transferred out of MTBSTC Aug 11, 1945 to Shoemaker (CA) for further transfer to Western Sea Frontier (in the Pacific).

So based on this timeline, I would say your dad was not assigned to an active squadron nor to an active boat.

Thanks so much for this information. I have been going through old documents all day and found his notice of separation. This is what it said for vessels and stations served on. NTS, Sampson, NY which I know was training. Then R/S, Navy 3002, USS LCI(L) 1076, USS PCE-845, and USS YP 645. and it said he was a Fireman, First Class (MoMM) Does that help at all because I know he said he entered late but I am quite sure he was on a PT Boat. Interesting, he should have MTBSTC on his list of duty stations, too. But that looks right. Went to LCI(L) 1076 on 22 Oct 1945 from Subic Bay, PI. Changed rate from Fireman 2nd to Fireman 1t on 28 Feb 1946.

Transferred to PCE-845 1 March 1946. Then transferred to YP-645 on 20 May 1946.

Says he enlisted on 29 Aug 1944. My guess is that he went to a Diesel engine school after boot camp at Sampson.

He arrived at the Boston Receiving station on 26 Feb 1945 from NTC Gulfport, MS. There was a diesel school in Gulfport.. Transferred to MTBSTC on 3-31-1945. As I mentioned previously, left MTBSTC 11 Aug 1945.

Yes, He went to NTC (Diesel) in Gulfport Miss for 5 weeks and MTB,STC in Melville RI for 16 weeks. Thank you so much for all of your information.

Greetings malfond and welcome! You mentioned I am quite sure he was on a PT Boat. During his training at MTBSTC he would indeed have been even if never assigned to one later. Could that be it?

Taking a ride on a PT is on my bucket list. One day I hope to take a trip to Portland OR and go out on PT 658. Jerry Gilmartin, who posts here and is very knowledgeable about PTs, and many others did a fantastic job restoring her. I took a ride on PT 305 in New Orleans in 2019 contact the National WW2 museum if interested. had a great time if you go their go in oct. its cheaper by 100.00. that too is armed to the gills. after the ride my son and I operated the 40mm Balfore have a great time with that bucket list item. regards, scott

That sounds like a great time Scott! They did a fine job also.

I used to live across the river from New Orleans. I miss it, I used to love going crawfishing in the bayou. Just find a shallow spot of water and set up the traps, in 2-3 hours I'd have a 5 gallon bucket half full of the tasty little buggers. What I didn't like was the public schools, I got there for my senior year and found out that they were all girl and all boy. How is the new kid on the block supposed to meet girls??? lol...

Hello Malfond and Scott.
The PT658 is still operating and giving reduced amount of rides by prior arrangement. I am fairly certain PT305 in New Orleans temporarily shut down its PT boat operations until further notice. So the 658 is now your only option for your bucket list. Or I almost forgot the Liberty Air Museum in Port Clinton Ohio has the PT Vosper boat that may be ready soon for rides.
