Topic: PT 134 Kill Marks
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=4911

What do the kill marks on PT 134 in this photo: https://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/80-G-K-04000/80-G-K-4341.html stand for? I get the barge but I'm not sure about the others. The image description mentions the boxcar:

Crewman adds symbols for KILLED railway boxcars to the boat's scoreboard, after she raided Japanese transportation facilities at Cebu City (Philippines).

jeff i'm sure others know for sure but looking at the the first japanese flag on left could the torpedoes indicate hits but not sunk. the islands -- either spy drop offs or invasion participations? the others seem self explanatory. this is only a guess. hope it helped.

Thanks Ted and Scott, I thought those 3 symbols were torpedoes.

No that refers to three torpedoes they put into Japanese BB Yamashiro at Battle of Surigao Straights. You can read the name Yamashiro below the Japanese Flag above the torpedoes. Besides rockets do not look like that!

All I did was point out the obvious! By the way, the IJN Yamashiro was sister to the IJN Fuso which had 6 dual turrets of 14 inch guns. These BBs were big sisters to the Kongo class BB. They were both considered obsolete before the invasion of the Phillipines, so I believe the Japanese Naval Command considered them to be expendable. As it turned out, both ships were sunk at Surigao Straights with Yamshiro breaking into 2 pieces both of which stayed afloat for hours until issued the "coup de gras" from nearby PT boats during the following morning. I see NO NEED of any rulers here.

The ruler's not for you Jerry.

I had those knuckle whacking penguins my first 3 years of school. I was perfect, they must have just not liked me! [:-grin-:]

Actually it was Fuso that broke in half, reportedly floating independently for about an hour. But there is some controversy about that account. It's beyond me how anyone survives the punishment Fuso and Yamashiro took. It's an image I just can't get out of my head.
