» Topic: 80 Ft Elco Boats In RN Service?
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=4804

the other day I was internet surfing and came across a color drawing of a 80 ft elco with british torpedo tubes and painted in a western approaches paint scheme. II don't think the british were ever supplied with these. can someone confirm this?

Dale;
That is correct,the Royal navy was never supplied with the 80' ELCO, post the drawing, it would be interesting to see.
As for ELCO boats, the Royal Navy received the 70' ELCO both the PT and PTC versions(The PT 10-19 RN designation MTB 259-268 and PTC 1-12 MGB 82-93) were 77' ELCO (PT 49-58 RN Designation MTB 307-316 ).
take care,

Dale;
I went through the whole website posting that Jeff provided and there is no 80 ELCO photo or diagram. In fact there is Nothing ELCO except the Camo plates showing 80's in 31/5P and 31/20L camo schemes.
The boat identified incorrectly as a 77' ELCO Air Sea Rescue boat is really a 70' Canadian Power Boat High Speed Launch(HSL), as Royal Canadian Air Force Air Sea Rescue Boats. The company was started by Sir Hubert Scott- Paine of British Power Boat Company, and built in Montreal, Canada.
take care,
TED

****Correction**** I saw what you are talking about, now that Al hit it with his Ginsu. I agree.....Bogus!

The 80-' ELCO rendering on that site is from the coastal forces section of BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH WARSHIP CAMOUFLAGE OF WWII. I have the volume of this series that contains the Coastal Forces section. After looking at the images and reading the text, I have little or no confidence in the validity of the bulk of the schemes presented in this section. Here are a few reasons why:

a. No photos are provided to support the illustrations.
b. Many of the boat profiles, particularly those supposedly of Higgins, ELCO, and British Power Boat types, are inaccurate to the point of being almost unrecognizable. If the shape of the boat is wrong, then the shape of the pattern is wrong.
c. One drawing and associated text identifies MTB 311 as an 80' ELCO. She was a 77' ELCO, which bears absolutely no resemblance to an 80' ELCO. The RN did not operate 80' ELCOs at all.
d. Another drawing and associated text identifies itself as MTB 267. It shows four tubes, DeWandre turret domes, and states that it had US radar. MTB 267 was the former PT 18, a 70' ELCO (and my Dad's boat). The configuration shown is that for the PT. When transferred to the RN, the turret domes had been removed and she mounted two 21” RN tubes; no radar was fitted.
e. MGB100 is depicted with structures she did not have. The text states that some of her sisters were completed as MTBs, which they were not. All of the 70' Higgins boats served as either RN MGBs or Royal Netherlands Navy MASBs.
f. The BPB boats are the worst of the lot. Boats in the same series (e.g., MGB53 & 64) are shown with totally different shapes; they were identical) Same goes for the Mark V and Mark VI MGB/MTB types.

I have that book too. I think the author stated that most of the schemes were accurate.

We are blessed that the Professor of PT Boats isn't shy.
