Dear Message Board

I was very happy to recieve over 30 original photo's dealing with the Shakdown cruise for PT's 10-19 from the Brooklyn Naval Yard to Florida and Cienfuegos Cuba. Mark Culp had written to say that PT 11 had run into a sandbar during this shakedown and needed to have her engines removed and other items so they could refloat her, tow her back and get her patched up. What I did not know was another boat had been damaged. According to these new pictures, PT 17 is at the dock in Cuba, listing to starboard. One of her torpedoes is laying across the Bow and several officers and Crewmen are checking this out. Another photo shows a crewmen holding one of PT 17 props snd it is missing a blade. Does anyone have any information as to what happened to this boat? I was not aware another boat was damaged in this manner. I have original work orders from Elco Electrical Engineer, John C. Kenney, but they do not mention PT 17. They do however mention PT 11. It should be noted here that Kenney rode these boats during this period. Not sure why he did not mention this damage to PT 17. All other items mentioned in his work orders deal with electrical problems to the boats. Any light on the subject would be great...

Frank,
I review my dad's diary for info on PT 17s new engine. Came up with the following.
PT-18:Received a new engine in Cienfuegos, Cuba around March 7/9, 1941.
PT-17: Only info I could find port engine was not working in Miami, February 20, 1941. Order was placed for new engine. No info when engine was installed. The squandron left Miami for Cuba with a stop over in Key West on March 4, 1941. Thats the only info related to engine replacement other then PT-11 which dad was on when it ran aground.

John

Thanks so much for the information. Your Dad sure saw a great deal during these shakdown cruises of the early boats. Wish he was here to talk with. It would have been such a thrill for me to meet him. I will double check his work entries again to make sure I have not missed anything. FYI John, the Pennant is in the Exhibit and looks great............
