I have been enjoying the forum for a while and have now registered. I am putting together a chronology of my father's service in the PT's. Ron 5 in 1942, quickly transfered to Ron 2 and Division 17 and later Ron 8. I have had some good luck but I want to gather all data that I can and would very much enjoy and appreciate any pictures that others might be willing to share regarding these Rons and Div. 17 from approx. September of '42 through the final reefing of the 113 Boat in August of '43. Will has been gracious enough to offer to send any photos that he might be able to locate re: Ron 2 and Ron 5. My father was in Div 17 in New Guinea from the very beginning. According to him operating with only four boats and then mostly two boats- 113, 114, 120 and 121. Any help would be appreciated. I remember many of my father's stories which he began to share only very late in his life and only to me. I would enjoy sharing them. It is amazing to me how his memory of events have aligned so well with my most recent readings on the PT's. He apparently worked on both the 113 and the 114 and at times the other two boats- gasoline and ammo was scarce- torpedoes even worse and spare parts non-existant so they ran every night with what they could cobble together. An aside- my father was a charter member of the PT Boat Museum, worked closely (but from a considerable distance) with Boats Newberry, and oversaw much of the reconstruction of the PT at Bend Marine in Melville which now resides in the museum. I have numerous photos somewhere of the progress of that construction. I anxiously await any feedback. (Hope to view Frank's exhibit in Springfield soon.)- Allan

Allen, my father was skipper on the 121 boat before it was destroyed. Give me a call if I can help.

My dad, Robert Withrow, served in RON 8 on PT 120 as Quartermaster 3rd Class. I have the last names of some of his fellow crew members: McNabb, Smith, Gonzales, Silvers, WIlliams, Ellestad, Planey and Stiles.

I also have a map he saved from then with some routes marked in ink. He did some of the nagivating, I think... I would love to know more about waht the 120 did during the war. Dad would never talk about any of the rough parts, only funny things that happened sometimes.

I really just want to understand more of what he went through during that time... any help would be appreciated.

Hi Allan,
My Dad was in Ron 8. He served on base mostly, but he was on the 121 until it was sunk and then went back to work on the base. He was on Base 4. Perhaps our Dads knew each other? What is your Dad's name? My Dad's name is William McLemore but he was known as Mac or Pops because he was older than the rest and had been in the Navy in the 30s. I will ask my Dad and see if he remembers your Dad. Please feel free to email me anytime. Dad is in his 90s now but his memory is still very good.
