» Topic: Ron 31 PT Boat 462 John Miele
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=4454

My husband John Miele always wore a PT Boat Cap or a WWII AND Korea cap. He visited Falls Rivfer several times. His themes in life were: "Every day is gravy" (he was Italian and from Brooklyn and after he almost lost his life on one of the islands in the South,Pacific, he never stopped appreciating each and every day ) . "Give 'em hell. " AND "Make memories." He did all those things very well and died after a long full life.

Please forgive me if this is not a proper use of this forum. John Miele died in April at age 94 of renal failure. My Virginia Dept of Veterans Services Representative recommended I reach out to other WWII PT Boaters who have/had renal failure to see if it was related to war time service. Was it related to dehydration and how long you went without fresh water? Or was it related to bouncing on the waves? Or was it related to other reasons?

If you have any information or if you know of other places/sites/people I could contact to research this question, could you please respond?

Thank you so much,
The Old Veteran's Wife
Linda Spencer

Mrs. Spencer,

My condolences to you on the passing of your husband, one of our U.S. Navy's brave PT boat sailors.

With no offense meant, and with all due respect -- I am not a doctor or in the medical profession -- but renal failure as a cause of death in a male at age 94 would seem to me to come under the umbrella of "natural causes."

I doubt any temporary dehydration, and even the occasional hard pounding the boats delivered to their young crews in rough seas more than 70 years ago would be a factor, unless a medical professional believes otherwise.
