» Topic: Nice Ernie Pyle sentence on PTs
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=4420

While cleaning the garage the other day, I found my Dad's 1944 copy of Ernie Pyle's Book "Brave Men," and started to read it.

In Chapter 2, "The Armada Sails," Pyle writes about the Navy command ship he was on as it sailed from North Africa for the invasion of Sicily in July of 1943.

He wrote: "Just at dusk, a whole squadron of vicious little PT boats, their engines roaring in one giant combination like a force of heavy bombers, crossed our bow and headed for Sicily."

"...Vicious little PT boats...engines roaring..." Nice turn of phrase.

Drew;
Most people don't know,because he is known as the corespondent in the trenches with " The Story of G.I. Joe", but Ernie Pyle was originally a Navy man!

This reminds me of a chapter about PTs in James Michener's TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC. A sort of worm's-eye view of the early boats off Guadalcanal.
