20mm Oerlikons in 1/48 scale
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=4324
I ordered two 3D-printed 20mm Oerlikons from Shapeways for my PT 187 in 1/48. Al Ross' lovely BlueJacket Ship Crafters kit includes only one as an early 103 series boat, so I needed two since PT 187 had a bow gun as well as the stern 20mm.
The guns came as a fully-assembled unit, and once again I'm reminded that 3D-printed parts are often not the final answer as a finished part, but rather serve as a basis for further modification and detailing.
In this case I cut them apart, discarded the armor plates, scratch-built the forward pedestal, both cradles and mounts, cut the barrels off and replaced them with brass photoetched kits from RB Model in Poland, cut off and threw away the magazines, and used a lot of brass rod, strip & sheet styrene. I also used some elbow grease and a liberal sprinkling of....um....naval language.
For the modelers among you I submit a before and after shot for your viewing pleasure.

Very nice improvements Bob, especially considering their size! I especially like the actual springs used, what a great touch. [:-cheers-:]

Well Jeff, while I appreciate your comments I'm afraid I have to give you the lion's share of the credit. I'm at the modeling level where....if I can see it....I can make it. But I have to see it first. For those who are wondering where this is going.....Jeff's pt103.com website is the most incredible, informative, detailed, and CAD-illustrated site imaginable. If you haven't been there, especially if you're a model builder, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
Jeff is accordingly awarded three gold stars, two "attaboys", and a hearty Navy "Well Done!".

Nice, nice ...too bad 1/48th scale is kids stuff. Time to consider building in appropriate scale like, for example ,1/16th...
Just kidding of course, great job!![:-laughing-:]

HA HA, Daniele! [:-grin-:] I'm just now finishing up the PT boat (in the kiddie-sized 1/48), but my next project is a 1/8 scale Fokker Dr.1. Since this is twice the scale of your fantastic PT boat, will it be twice as good? [:-good-:]

Bob , classic aircrafts in large scale are rewarding projects, I've been toying with the idea of a 1/9th Albatos D Va for a while...
Maybe when the current project is over...arond 2025 or so...[:-rdo-:]

Hi David,
As I said to Jeff, above, if I can see it, I can make it. But I have to be able to see it first. That's where David Doyle Books comes in......I have no fewer than THREE of your books on PT boats.
Couldn't have done it without you! [:-cheers-:]
Cheers!

While I'm in the thanking mode, I'd like to thank Dick Washichek for all the hard work he's put into this site. And, although I realize this is not a modeling website, I wanted to add one more photo, the detail of which would not have been possible without the good offices of the many respondents who provided advice, photos, and help: Jerry Gilmartin, Daniele Klay, David Waples, and many others. So, thanks, Gentlemen! [:-cheers-:]
This would be the finished gun on the finished model.

Great work on the guns Bob! They really came out great. Looking at the photo of the soon to be (if not already) finished boat it looks like you've really captured the details. She looks great!

Very nice Bob, and the detail on the torpedo tubes look spot on! Even got the firing wires I see. You must use a microscope as a building aid...

Thanks for the kind words, Gentlemen; much appreciated! Since this is not really a modeling forum I feel I'd have to have Dick's blessing before I post any more photos. They do take up a lot of bandwidth.
Cheers!

Okay, thanks Dick. Here's my version of PT 187. It's not the perfect model, but I'm not sure the perfect model exists. In any event, it simply represents my best research/reading/ListeningToAdvice effort. Any errors are - as they say - completely mine.

Bob;
Awesome!!
The only things I can see wrong, is you have a RON 2 and 3(2) emblem on the base instead of a RON 6 emblem. PT 187, 188 and 189 were transferred to RON 6 on March 10, 1943, then they were later transferred to RON 9 on May 29, 1944(ACQ pg 457). I think that photo of PT 187 is after transfer to RON 6, but still shows RON 12 modifications to the .50 cal turret stops/grab rails.
RON 12 arrived at Morobe in late August 1943(ACQ pg 193).
With this aside you have made a wonderfully detailed model!!! It is Outstanding!!
Take care,
TED

Right you are on the patch, Ted. Sharp eyes! I did this deliberately since the RON 12 patch - while colorful - isn't very clear as to what it is, while the patch with the Japanese flags is more of an iconic Pacific image. It seems to place the model into historical context for non-PT boat modelers who then see the flags under the boat and understand what the whole thing is about.

Thanks Jeff, but you're mostly to blame: too many excellent CAD drawings on your website which allowed infinite detailing. [:-grin-:]

Magnificent model Bob! You and Al make quite a team! I sure hope this one makes its way to Phoenix for the next IPMS show.
Really nice attention to detail. I love the open hatch leading to the engine room, and the careful work on the life raft.
I know you used after market parts for the 20mm. Did you use 3D parts on anything else? Or was the rest scratch built?
Thanks for sharing your work. I hope to see it in the flesh someday.
Dave

Hi David,
Thanks so much for the kind words! If you send me an e-mail I'll send you a link to an online album which records the build in detail and which will answer all your questions.
Cheers!
