I was looking for information on the supposed rescue of British Sailors after the HMS Penelope was sunk, after being hit by a German E boat. I was told that PT-215 from Ron 15 helped with that rescue, but I can find no evidence that the Ron was involved with this. I do know that 2 LST's took survivors on-board, but nothing on the PT Boats. The son of one of the PT Sailors claims his dad was awarded the Navy Marine Medal for taking part in this rescue. If anyone has any information about the PT Boats being involved in this rescue, please let me know, I could locate nothing/.

Frank;
This is all I could find on RON 15 involvement. Fred Rosen's RON 15 History does not mention it.

here you go:

Thanks Ted, I did see this already. Surprised there was no mention of this operation involving any of the Ron 15 boats.

Frank,

The 216, with Cecil Sanders, CO and John Steinson, Exec Officer, were definately involved in the rescue of the survivors from the sinking of PENELOPE.
There may have been another boat also, but I can't confirm it. Several of the crew also received the Navy And Marine Corps medals: GM C.W. McVey, RM John Mitchell, MoMM William Moen, GM Arnold Sumstadt, along with Lt. Cecil Sanders. Lt Frank Pressley must have been along on the 216 that day as he also received a medal and is mentioned in Sanders remembrances.

Thanks so much Steve, I wish there was a write up on the rescue.

This is an excerpt from a letter my Dad received from John Steinson in 1994.

John was Executive Officer on the 216, and was at the helm that day, sailing from Naples to Anzio. He describes being hailed by a LCI to help in the rescue
attempt of survivors of PENELOPE.

Thanks Steve, I am still researching this, but have come up empty. Mention of the sinking is not the problem, but giving any credit to the PT BOATS is.
