http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=3992

Hi,

I wonder whether you could assist me with some insignia information regarding my chosen PT boat. I'm modelling PT-562 from RON-29 in 1944 (Mediterranean). Can you tell me (if you know) where and how many RON29 insignias would be placed, how many and where would the "Moonbeam McSwine" go?? My other query relates to the PT boat numbers. On the hull it has white numbers. Would you know the 1:1 sizes of the hull numbers as I have some Echelon numbers but think they may be too small and may need to obtain some masks to make larger ones.

Many thanks

Toby

Toby;
Welcome! For the numbers on 1/35th or 1/32nd scale PT Boats I use Woodland Scenics MG747 45 degree USA NO. Gothic White top for bow numbers and middle for cabin/turret numbers.
Hope this helps.
Take care,
TED

This is the original PT 562 Emblem, it is on display at the PT Boat Museum in Fall River, Mass. It was Donated by PT 562 Plankowner Crewman Master Chief Gunners Mate Louis M. Breeding, USN (Ret.). It was mounted on a bulkhead below decks, probably chartroom, officers quarters or galley. Not painted on cabin. The only thing RON 29 boats had were kill marks on "windshield" and RON 29 emblem on spray shields, but not all boats had this.

Hi Ted,

What can I say but THANK YOU!!!! I've spent the best part of three years researching this boat, and I've never seen the three photos you've just posted!!!

Could I indulge you for a few more things?? Would you happen to have a decent sized photo of the RON29 insignia as I am going to produce my own decal for it, but the Google ones are not good quality??

Also, when you mention the spray shields, do you mean the curved sheeting either side of the bridge?? Also roughly how big would the insignia be as you can't really see it on the photos. I need to make myself some kill markings as well!!!

I've add my last photo of the PT boat and would welcome any comments, especially about accuracy etc...

Many many thanks again

Toby;
The model looks real nice. Using Stan's model as a example is a good idea. His model is spot on. look at the photos of Stan's model, he has the RON 29 emblem on the spray shields. The worn out canvas you have on the forward turret, while it looks interesting and different, would not be like that on a RON 29 boat, or any other, they would replace it ASAP.
When RON 29 boats did have canvas on the forward turret it was only on the forward facing part of the depression rail only to block spray that came over the bow. Otherwise, they only used the canvas cover to cover the guns and mount.
Do you need another model example? Maybe you can use this one, This is how they were painted on the sprayshields (yes the curved part). The window "shutters" on the forward cabin, were not used on RON 29 Boats, They had the normal windows, painted over.
