Yes Ted, you have the eyes of an eagle!

If anyone has trouble opening the high res .tif images, the free Irfanview will: http://www.irfanview.com/. I recommend installing the plugin pack also. The program has a lot of features such as opening a page of thumbnails of all the images in the folder the image you are viewing is in, simply press T. Just pay attention when installing, there might be a pre-checked checkbox asking if you want to install a Yahoo toolbar or similar. Uncheck it if not wanted.

Jeff -

Thanks for the photos! Only the second photo of my cousin's PT 523 I've ever seen! 523 was strafed at Leyte.

You are very welcome Robert, would your cousin have been aboard her at the time?

I hope they continue to add more from their vast stash! And to organize like navsource does would be very handy. A link for anyone that doesn't know of this great resource: http://www.navsource.org/archives/12/05idx.htm.

Jeff,
Thanks for the great photos. Especially the shot of the four PT cradles in the well deck of the USS Oak Hill. My copy of "AT CLOSE QUARTERS" (Paperback, 2003) doesn't have that shot on page 49.
I always thought the LSD's would have made an ideal conversion to AGP's.

I'm glad to have found them too guys!

I read the brief account of the attack on the 523 in At Close Quarters Robert, rotten luck with the short letup of the rain.... I'm happy your cousin survived. I tried zooming the picture but the crews faces are too blurry in that image to be of any real use. Still cool knowing he was on her, also seeing the communication method they were using. I'm guessing they were under radio silence?

Jeff;
Nice!!! I especially like the PT 111 and PT 112 onboard USS Tallulah(AO 50) photos, I always thought this was a series, but the experimental camo test is awesome.
I don't know if it is part of your list Also photo NH 100912 is a close up of PTC stern(if this is the same photo set I remember, it is PTC 12).
Take care,
TED

Glad you enjoyed them Ted! I liked the 111-112 shots too. And the color "A well - Tatooed Pt Boat Crewman", I have a small version of it but this one is glorious! I should probably change my 1:1 tracer / AP ratio on my .50 render... bleh.

The 109 stern shot was most welcome too!

I think the "Torpedoes Away" shot is the 731 boat just before the Russians tool possession of her.

Jeff;
Here is another one;

[image]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p249/ptboats/Ted%20Walther/80-G-K-13829.jpeg[/image]
PT sailors hitting on a Panamanian lady on Toboga Beach. The lady is sitting on a concrete ramp used by the local fisherman to haul their Cayuca's out of the water at the end of the day. The dock in the background shows the 18 foot tidal range that is on the Pacific side, it has a floating section that is tethered to the pilings as this rises and falls with the tide. The 80' ELCO in the background has tubes and a 20mm on the stern so this is 1942-1943.
Take care,

Jeff;
Fishing is fantastic there!
So is REAL fishing:0) There are about 1600 living on the island and while they have goats and chickens seafood is of course the main staple food. Here are recent photos.

These are views of the current pier area. basically the same location, rebuilt, with same principles..

This is the oldest ship(104yrs and counting) to pass through the canal and since it gives weekly tours, it also holds the record for most times through the Canal. She also goes to Toboga, but not as often anymore. I have gotten underway on her 5 times since 1996. Twice to Toboga.

Jeff,

Thanks for posting those.

The 80' Elco twin-.50 starboard turret color shot (80-G-K-1300/80-G-K-13627) is of the 107.

Makes me wonder if all the other series of shots of the 107 I've seen (posted in black & white), taken at the same time, were in color, too. The twin-.50 turret shot you posted is the only one I've seen in the series in both color and b&w.

You're welcome Drew, I thought I'd save others time in sorting through many pages of search results. Hopefully I found most PT images...

Nice catch on the 107! I recognize those faces, I've stared at the other 107 images on Gene's site long enough. Usually the G-K series are color but I don't know if that's a rule. The G-K shot of Kelly I posted earlier is B&W... http://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/80-G-K-01000/80-G-K-1279.html.

I sorted out the previous posts and made a page with the boats in numerical order: http://www.pt103.com/PT_Boat_Photos.html. If anyone can ID boats not in the numerical list I'd appreciate it if you let me know.

Hi Jeff,
The photo 80-G-53793 of the boat under a camo net if you enlarge it and look to the right through the foliage, (between the tree trunks) you can clearly discern the block numbers "3" and "2" painted on the side of the bulwark next to the bridge. I suspect this is PT132.
Just an educated guess.

Jeff;
Nice photos! I blew up the USS Atascosa photos, in the starboard quarter view the boat closest to the camera is PT 174 on charthouse, with no 40mm forward, but it looks like 164 on cockpit shielding(PT 164 was a SCR-517 boat so we know this is 174). The boat inboard is PT 168 . In the other photo, the boat forward starboard side boat is PT 171 and the boat with beehive radar (SCR 517) on portside forward is PT 167.
Take care,
TED

Good eye Jerry, thank you! Looks like it to me too, and the horn on the chart house roof makes it a 138 or earlier:

This Morobe one is supposed to be the 132 also, with the 68 and an Elco 80 on the far side of the river. Taken in early 1943:

Such a nightmare to discern details in photos of boats with that camo Andy! Even with larger images... I also notice they labeled the stern shot as being from the forward quarter.

Ted caught a few more errors:
The photo of PT 62 is actually not, the 20mm magazine is just from PT 62. The boat they are on is a 80' ELCO.
http://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/80-G-K-13000/80-G-K-13626.html

Based on the hardware I'd put it between PT 160 and 186.

Another:
80-G-453471 PT-601, July 1945. is not PT 601, it's some other earlier boat off New Guinea of P.I. PT 601 was in RON 41, they never left the states.
http://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/80-G-453000/80-G-453471.html

And finally:
That is not PT 65 its really PT 59 and that is Jack Searles on the bow(blond guy in Khakis). He was the one who sunk this sub on 9 December 1942, while on patrol with Frank Freeland in PT 44. I enlarged the photo and I don't know if its the lighting, crappy paint, grease or what on the 59 because it sort of does look like 65, but 65 was in RON 5 and came out to Tulagi later in the spring of 1943. PT 65 was in Panama when this photo was taken.
http://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/SC-243000/SC-243966.html

Once again thank you Ted!

Jeff,

Thanks again for posting these recent photos. I particularly like the one of the 111 and the 112 on board the Tallulah.

Finally, a photo of John Claggett's doomed 111...

Me too Drew. I just noticed a detail on the 111 that has been eluding me for a long time, the pre-radar mast rest:

[image]http://www.pt103.com/images/ptpics/PT_111_PT_112_Mast_Rest_19_N_35467.jpg[/image]

There are some fittings on the side of the windscreen and hatchway hatch that I can only guess at.

A cropping from a PT 141 photo showing those buttons being used for a canvas extension of some sort. It looks like it is not attached to the hatch but a guess would be it normally would. Another guess is either a windscreen or to funnel air into the engine compartment:

Thank you Dick! Could this qualify as a possible "booby hatch" like the ones in the Higgins drawings you showed me?

I'm not sure, this "Booby Hatch" treatment looks a little disheveled compared to neat tidy package on the Higgins. But what the heck it evidently worked or did it. The booby hatches as I understand were deployed while in port not at full speed like show in your posted photo - the action in the pooh looks like a wide "E" ticket ride.

I tried to find a view from forward but no luck. I did find another aft view of them in the image of PTs 151 through 156 loaded aboard the SS White Plains so the canvas wasn't unique to the 141. This is PT 153, 155 has it also:

While on the subject of unusual canvas, PT 143 with canvas on the forward turret:

Stu Hurley's eagle eye spotted the canvas structure fully erected on PT 108 aboard the SS Joseph Stanton, thank you Stu!:

Jeff,
At least there doesn't appear to be one on the 109[:-cheers-:] Can't tell for sure if the buttons are there.
Maybe no need for re-work.

Best Regards,
Stu.

Stu and Jeff;
If you can see the little extension piece coming off the port .50 depression rail, then the snaps are there. I will look at Stanton photos again, but since 108 has it, it is a good bet that 109 had them too, probably the whole first series, 103-138(there is a gap in completion dates between 138 and 139, 138 was completed on 9/29/42 and 139 was completed on 10.13/42, 16 days, this might mean nothing, but there are slight changes notated on Jeff's site for 139 on.
Just a thought.
Take care,
TED

P.S. this does appear as if it is a canvas forced air set up, but if so, why is it on the boat set up while on the Stanton? Maybe, the photos were taken close to loading time? Might this be found in the ELCO parts catalog?

Ted. Jeff,
If visible, the two vertical brackets for the frame on the forward coaming would indicate whether the boat was set up for the canvas extension. They might be easier to spot than the buttons.

Best Regards,
Stu.

One more, a starboard side view of PT 109 on the SS Joseph Stanton:

Title: USS PT-109
Description: Stowed on board the Liberty Ship Joseph Stanton for transportation to the Pacific. Photographed at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia, 20 August 1942. Photograph from the Bureau of Ships Collection in the U.S. National Archives.
http://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nara-series/19-n/19-N-30000/19-N-33165.html

It's possible the 109 was outfitted with the canvas structure also, there seem to be 7 blurry dots in the same locations as the 111s buttons. It's too blurry to tell but there's also something above the windshield that looks similar to the structures frame:

I would think those shields were probably put off on the beach, or stowed in the forepeaks of the boats in the forward areas.

Still wondering if that heating unit (or was it an inflatable life raft stowage box?) was removed from the 109 "in the area." If it was a heating unit, I'm sure it probably was.

It's strange that that structure does not appear to be visible in the stern three-quarter view photo though.
Maybe they were in the process of fitting it, although the photo dates are the same.

Stu.

Yes Drew, that's a stowage locker. I can't remember ever seeing one in the field. I'm hoping that one day memos will surface about the removal of these and the function of the canvas structure.

OK guys I apologize, I had this photo (in the wrong folder doh) of the 109 (right) and 110 (left) I missed that shows the structure on the 109:
[image]http://www.pt103.com/images/ptpics/PT_109_110_Sterns_On_SS_Joseph_Stanton_Cropped.jpg[/image]

The full image: http://www.pt103.com/images/ptpics/PT_109_110_Sterns_On_SS_Joseph_Stanton.jpg

I tend to agree with you Ted about it being an air scoop, a total guess would be that the windshield would block a certain amount of air from the funnels so maybe this was an experiment to get some heat out of the engine room, especially for Pacific bound boats. Cooler air = more performance! And a Motormac that won't pass out from the heat... those guys are one of the unsung heroes in my book.

Jeff,
That's interesting, as in the stern photo of the 109 the structure is not there and the liferaft is visible.
Adds weight to the theory that it was in the process of being fitted prior to shipping.

Best Regards,
Stu.

Stu found an image of the 105 refueling showing the front of the structure, it looks closed but may have a big wrinkle on the bottom indicating it was detached from the hatchway and hanging loose:

Thank you Stu, you're a fine researcher.

Thanks,
It was good to go through all the photos again to find a 'new' detail. Amazing what you miss, I had never spotted the hood in that photo. It would be good to get a definitive answer as to the function of it. It does look loose at the front. If it was just an air scoop, I would have thought that the open hatch would be just as effective.

Stu.

A total guess would be it is why they went with a much taller hatchway and did away with 2 of the engine hatch funnels starting with PT 187.

Going by the white funnels, this might be PT 140 or 141 at MTBSTC.

This mysterious canvas structure (whatever it is) may explain the unexplainable deflector and opening in the back of the day cabin on the Revell kit.

Could it have been that it was supposed to block/prevent shipping water over the dayroom canopy into an open engine room hatch, and/or the 20 mm gun area?

Do you have an image of it Dave?

I don't think so Drew it looks open in front. But I've certainly been wrong before! It was on June 23rd 1969. [:-veryhappy-:]

In any case it wasn't used much, I've been checking but so far no photos of it fully erected on a moving boat.

Okay,
Funny I've been looking at this header photo for how long and haven't noticed this? Anyway, first picture, is this some sort of rectangular frame to assist in directing air into the engine hatch?
photo PT Boat ducting_zpsvardlzhw.png

And what the heck is this sticking up by the port forward cowl vent? Any thoughts?
photo PT Boat Ducting Mystery_zpsvtgln3e7.png

By the way, I take back what I suggested about the Revell kit. I'm sure it was a lame attempt on their part to create the deflector and not anything to do with our mystery canvas. :-)

It looks like the hatchway aft hatch open Dave. There appears to be something behind the 20mm portside but I've no clue as to what:

[image]http://www.pt103.com/images/ptpics/PT_149_10_Feb_1943_02_Cropped.jpg[/image]

Guessing that the images were taken on the same day, the object(s) could be what is behind the 20mm in the above image:

Guys,

Don't think the two photos were taken the same day, or may even be of the same boat, as the masthead photo boat has it's A-frame mast up ahead of the SCR-517A, and the other doesn't.

The masthead photo boat has a little added piece on the 20-mm limit rail, "star"-reinforced aft tube doors, and no canvas splash shield on the port aft twin-.50 turret. The other boat in the photo(s) has no added limit piece, a splash shield on the aft turret, and smooth aft tube doors.

As a matter of fact, the masthead photo boat has always been I.D.'d as the 149, but photos of the 149 where positive I.D. is present (boat number seen on the charthouse or starboard twin-.50 turret), there's no A-frame mast up, so..?
