Death of A. V. Stockdale

To All Hands:
My friend, Alphonsis Vernon Stockdale died October 5th, 2015 in Phoenix, Arizona where he lived with his daughter. He was a survivor of the Pearl Harbor bombing. He was then put on PT 107 in Panama, where I met him and served with him until he got jungle rot all over his body in the Solomon Islands. He was then evacuated to the States for treatment and healed up.
After he was discharged from the service (20+ years), I met him again at a PT Boat Reunion in Long Beach, California. During his time in California, he also suffered a severe car crash that killed his girlfriend. After that he was in a bar when some men came in to rob it. The robber was mad because Stockie didn't have a billfold, so he shot him in the ass.
He visited my house in California numerous times and we always attended the PT Reunions together. His birthday was August 2, 1915, so he was just over 100 when he died. His birthday is the same day Kennedy's boat was attacked and sunk. He was the best poker player I ever played cards with. He worked for Hollywood race track as a cashier and enjoyed many of the races there.
I'm sorry for his passing, as he was a good friend for 70 years.

John;
I am sorry to hear Stocky headed out on his last patrol, but he is once again on PT 107. A friend for 70 years is something we all could wish for. He was a true Shipmate.
Take care,
TED
