Hazardous, with all that good solid 3/8" plywood protecting you? Not even that in most areas of the boat. Downright dangerous I'd say. I hope you got the extra pay at least.

Were attacks from aircraft the crews biggest worry?

Unfortunately, while they tried to get it, PT boat service didn't get additional "hazardous duty pay".

GOT NO HSZARDOUSE DUTY PAY, THEY REMOVED IT LATER
I THINK ONE OPF OPUR MAIN COMNCERNS WAS WITH OOUR OWN PLANES/ FRIENDLY FIRE/ATTACKING US. WE GOT CAUGHT BY SOME BOMBERS ON OUR WAY BAck to base from a patrol. they kept making strafing runs on us even though we kept trying to signal them we were one of theirs, it seems they had the wrong recognition signals for the day.ther e was a trial on the incident and they were found aT Fault.no one got hurt but it could have turned out very badly.there ias a complete file record on the incident,. we also came under attack from our marine fighter planes st night.it seems that did not have enough training as to how to recognize the pt boats from japanese barges.later we started having marine pilots as passengers on some of our patrols so they could acclinate themselves about the boats before they went out on th eir patrols. boy/ did i have some fun when i was told we were having them aboad for a patrol. their meals slightly different , when that fork went up and down in front of their face

Damn Earl, that had to be awful. Seeing one of your own mistake you for an enemy and come at you firing. How would you signal that you were a friendly?

Hah, do I want to know what a "slightly different" meal was? I assume it wasn't a pizza something good. [:-laughing-:]

we had a white star on top od the day room..we signaled with our signal flagS, we yelled./ we jumped around hoping they would figure it out.finally all boats turned our guns on them and they apparently got the meswsage.we could not break radio silence, even in this situation.
the slightly diffxerentd meals were like greasy vienna sausage and dehydrated potatoes.etc
ps/ we ded the passengers first/cleabed up a l;ittle and then our crew ate but not the same stuff.

Thank you Earl.

I like sausage in most forms but vienna's are not one of them. Nasty little mush tubes with a bad aftertaste. It sounds like they were the same back then too.

I picked up some cans Earl, ate one for breakfast and while it isn't as good as Spam I did finish it. At least they're cheap. What kind of sauce and spices would you recommend? My culinary skills tell me "fry them up with some onions and beans" but I'd like to try one of your recipes. I'll tell my son we're having "PT Chef's Special" for dinner. [:-veryhappy-:]

hey jeff
i noiled them in water for only a short time.took out of pot and draine4d the greasy water.replaced them in opot with tomatoes/onions/pimmientos=- chopped up and catsup.cooked onlfy till hot and added some peas/simmerred for only a sHort time /added salt/pepper and a very small dash of hot sauce.onlfy a FEW DROPS.SERVED WITH BREAD AND BUTTER TO SOP UP THE SAUCE.WENT WELL WITH BAKKED BEANS AND OR CORN BREAD.IF YOU WERE ABLE TO GET TOMATO SAUCE THEN USE IT INSTEAD OF CATSUP.

Thank you Earl, I am going to try it sometime in the next week. It actually sounds good as a spaghetti sauce and better than some of the things I come up with.

I had this for breakfast this morning Earl:

[image]http://www.pt103.com/images/asst/EarlsViennaRecipe.jpg[/image]

Not bad, the sauce went well with the viennas and the peas, hot sauce, and onions (didn't have pimentos) added some depth. I ate it all. Thanks, I now have a few cans in the pantry and will make this again when I want something different.
