Picked mine up at Costco the other day. About half way through, so far I noticed a couple of bits of information that should have been caught in editing, such as an 1800 HP Packard and a PBY4 Liberator.

Was some what surprised at the fact that in all the patrols JFK went on, he only had actual contact with the japs twice.

Bill'
PB4Y-1 Liberator is the correct Navy designation.
VD-1 Fleet Photo Reconnaissance Squadron One, VP-51(later redesignated VB-101) as was VP 14(later redesignated VB-102)were some of the Navy Squadrons that flew out Henderson Field, Guadalcanal during this time frame.

Here is a video of VB-101 ant Guadalcanal 1943

Here is a link to two planes from VB 102 lost on Feb 14, 1943:

The Packard V12 4M-2500 engine, the versions at Tulagi were 1200hp.
(later models were 1350hp(1944) and finally 1500hp(1945).

Take care,

Bill,

I've got your book on order, and I'm looking forward to reading it.

After reading, researching, discussing and sharing information on PT 109 for over fifty years now, I'll be glad to share my take(s) on the book with you, once I've read it.

I'm encouraged that you're open to correcting any possible mistakes in future editions. Not many authors or publishers are!

Bill it appears I spoke too soon regarding the PBY4 Liberator. With out thinking I assumed that a Catalina and a Liberator.had been confused and combined, there numerical designations are so similar they escaped my comprehension..

I apologize for my error.

Hi Ted,
In terms of completeness, the Packard 5M-2500 is 1850 Horsepower. It has the 1945 model Supercharger and Aftercooler, The PT-658 has 3 of them. Just in case you forgot! So although they were not on PT103 series boats like the one not to be named, the book is not too far off base since some actual Packard PT Boat Engines were of that horsepower rating.
Anyway the Engine Model vs Horsepower goes like this (AFAIK)

3M-2500 = 1350 Horsepower (no supercharger)
4M-2500 = 1500 Horsepower (added first model supercharger)
5M-2500 = 1850 Horsepower (larger supercharger plus Aftercooler)

I have no idea where you got that 1200 figure from?

Jerry;

Ted,
Yes I know, this subject is one of those that has a lot of incorrect information posted on the internet. It sort of is like the one that says that Rolls Royce Merlin engines were commonly installed on PT Boats. Keep fighting the good fight!

In talking to Bud Liebenow (Skipper of the 157 for those that haven't read this book yet) this week, he is really, really appreciative of Doyle's details and research he put into this! He has brought many voices by those that were there in the picture. The events of the sinking and rescue and incidental details of life at Rendova are told are as they've always been told to me by Liebenow and Welford West (Bud's torpedo man). Doyle got it right!

Bridge,

That's great news...good to hear this from Mr. Liebenow and Mr. West, since they were there...

Hi Bill,
I hope you're still checking in. I read your book while on vacation this past week. I really enjoyed it. While much of the information was well known to me I learned quite a bit more.

I appreciate how the books ties everything back to PT-109 and doesn't wander off into tangents or speculation. Everything seemed to be based on facts which I appreciate a great deal. You can't imagine (or maybe you can) how much nonsense I've heard about JFK and his naval service over the years.

Thanks so much for writing this book. I'll pop over to Amazon and leave you a good review.

Bill,
Are you involved in this movie I've been hearing about "Mayday 109"? I hope they reach out to some key people for assistance so that they get it right. In any event I enjoyed the book and discovering the new information I hadn't come across before. I hope it does well for you.

Finished reading this afternoon. Cleared up several misconceptions for me. Anyone who reads PT 109 would be doing a disservice to themselves if they don't read the "NOTES and SOURCES" section at the back.
