With my deepest gratitude to Ray Wilbur Sr. who served on the 495 boat and his son Ray Jr. both of whom have provided invaluable support and information during this build and to Don Brown, whose father was the skipper of the 493 boat and who also provide incredable photos and insights, I present Gentleman Jim.

I just posted 18 photos of the 99% complete build. DTo do still are the anchor and props, cradle and clutter.

What a great build Ed. Congratulations. There's many reasons beyond a great build to be proud of this boat. I'm sure all who served in this Ron appreciate what you've done.

What a wonderful job of building this boat. I am impressed with the work and the thought process that has gone into the build. Will you be using the stand that has been supplied by the Kit, or will you build your own. Dust will be the biggest enemy to this boat so I will assume you will be building a case for her? Now that you have done this boat, think you will build another. As I said watch out, people will be having you build one for them.............

Thanks Frank. I already bought a 32 x 12 x 12 case for it. I will be using the kit base. I'm talking with the fellow who made the star and number paint masks about a mask to use to paint the nameplate area of the stand. It will say PT 495 in the center in PT-style block letters in large type. In the 4 corners it wii say with smaller type:

80 ' ELCO SURIGAO STRAIT
PT 495
MTB RON 33 OCTOBER 1944

I will probably paint the stand"steel" but have not decided about the nameplate area background or letter colors. Suggestions?

Green #3/white like the boat?

I will take a break from building for a little while. This was my first boat model and the most demanding build, intense research effort and most rewarding modeling experience of my life. This is in no small part due to the fine people I've met on this site.

Hi Ed,
On my project I'm using WEM in two ways. I'm going to use the same anti-fouling red paint for the bottom. Right now I'm planning on mixing some Floquil colors along with some WEM Tropical Green. It's a long story how I came to this decision but I do have a few questions for you...

1. How much did you thin your paint and at what pressure did you shoot it?
2. What thinner did you use? Lacquer thinner?
3. Did you have any issues with the WEM paint?

I mixed 50/50 with laquer thinner. As for pressure, I played with it and used what produced the pattern and texture i wanted for the task at hand.

The WEM paints produce a nice finish but require a LOT of mixing. It was very hard to go back and tough-up an area or re-paint a section and get it to match the previous color. I think it was because it was so thin that it took a lot of layers to build up the color. Deck green was the most ttoublesome. The red was the easiest.

I found that I had to stir and stir then I poured the paint into a mixing bottle and filled the tin to the same level as the paint had been with thinner and stirred that then poured it into the mixing bottle and, you got it, stirred a lot again. i painted with the paint cut on my Pasche airbrush and stirred the paint each time I re-filled the cup.
