http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=3604

Charlie and ALCON:
I am trying to trace career of LT. Joseph Lyons Broderick USNR(Princeton '37), I know he was with RON 7 and was on PT 142(FLYING SHAMROCK), the night LCDR Buckeley jumped into the Japanese Barge. Buckeley, Broderick, and LT Crager all boarded the enemy craft with .45 Colt's drawn. However, recent board member ETOUSA, sent me letters, written later in the war, which I think were written by Broderick, but at the time it appears he was with RON 24.
All my references(KOTS included) only mention his time in RON 7. Charlie(or anyone else), does PTHQ show Broderick's Squadron assignments?
Thanks for your help.
Take care,
TED

Using Fold3.com I have found out LT. Joseph Lyons Broderick, USNR(O-119769) at some point left PT's and was on board USS LST 951(H) 6/17/45 , then USS Rescue (AH 18) 6/20/45-6/24/45 for transport to USNH Navy 926 for further treatment. Then on 6/28/45 he was on LST 862 at Saipan, he became Commanding Officer of LST 862 on 7/11/1945 and was relieved of Command on 11/15/1945 and again transferred to Navy 926, for transport back to continental United States for discharge.

He got his commission through the Midshipman School on the USS Prairie State in New York, graduating with the Class of May 1942.

He was a lawyer (Harvard 1940) )

He was in training at MTBSTC June 1 - July 30, 1942. He was listed as being sent to RON 5 after MTBSTC.

Ted, Charlie, Etc.

In my book Deadly PT Boat Patrols, as announced on this Forum, makes ten points of reference to Ens. (and later Lt(jg)). He served as XO on PT 119 in Ron SIX then Div SEVENTEEN in New Guinea. He is mentioned as having a phonograph which the officers used extensively. The book has a nice account of PT 119 with Broderick as XO attacking a Japanese I-53 Class submarine. He was assigned temporary duty aboard USS Hilo. There are several other references to his PT 119, but I did not always include names of officers and crew.

Of course, PT 119 burned to the waterline at Tufi, which is discussed in great detail in the book with personal observations from both officers and crew members. The crew then took over PT 142 and there is a nice photo of that crew but the officers are not included. The boarding of the Japanese barge by Lt. Comdr. Bulkeley, Lt(jg) Broderick and Lt(jg) Crager is also discussed with some notations from Lt(jg) De Mond's diary. By August of 1943 PT 142 was designated a relief boat and Broderick was designated a relief boat second officer (XO).

At 417 pages it is an interesting book. Worked on it for seven years.

Welcome Aboard!
Motor Machinist Mate 1st Class is the correct term, What was your fathers name, if he was on PT 119, Allan probably has his name.
Take care,
