Some of you know that I have been working on a history of MTB Division SEVENTEEN for several years (at least six). That work grew by necessity to include a history of Task Group 50.1 operating in the enemy waters of New Guinea in 1942 and 1943.

The book includes a great foreword by James Patton, Capt., USN (Ret'd.), former commander of a nuclear attack submarine. It identifies more than 450 people, contains more than 250 photos, has 250+ endnotes regarding sources and is 8 1/2 X 11 format and about 450 pages.

It covers all aspecst of the fighting men's lives over just a two-year period. Lots of minutia and details never before discussed. Many vets allowed full use of their scrap books and recollections.

Because the book is so large and the subject matter is considered to be attractive to only a small niche, many publishers passed on producing the book. Worse, a few offered contracts but wanted full control over the title, cover design, editing of material and insisted that the 250+ photos be reduced to less than 25.

The only way that I could produce the book was to find a printer willing to work directly from my PDF files. I have the book in production and have the first printing in hand. I am prejudiced, of course, but I find the books to be quite impressive and I am very satisfied with the final product.

This is a Motor Torpedo Boat book unlike anything every produced before. ADM DeMars read the manuscript and requested a copy for the USN Museum.

I have sent out several copies to those who helped with research, etc. over the years. Charlie Jones has a copy and perhaps one day he will write a review of the work- good, bad or indifferent. T. Garth Connelly has a copy simply because he is a neighbor and friend.

As of now, the books are being offered from my home for $39.95 soft-bound, plus shipping ($5.15). A hard-bound limited and numbered edition (just 35 books), will be available very soon at $49.95 plus shipping, which may be slightly more expensive than the soft-bound.

Of course, I'm hopeful that one or more members will purchase a book and will find it worthy of the attention of all.

Best regards,

Allan Lawrence

Perhaps you'd consider uploading a page or two, including a captioned photograph, to this forum?

The book arrived Monday. I had LASIK done on my eye yesterday and as soon as it settles down, I'm reading this baby. Looks very interesting! Can't wait to dig into it.

When the hard bound edition come out please notify us how to order one. At the meantime,
some photos of the book and inside pages will be helpful. Good Luck.

I have taken a few photos but have no luck in trying to post them. Is there someone willing to post them if I send them via e-mail?

I have received several compliments on the book from people who should know and appreciate the work that went into this. I cannot pass up the opportunity, however, to include here an e-mail that I received today from Dr. Winkler of the Naval Historical Foundation on behalf of Admiral Bruce DeMars.

Dear Mr. Lawrence,

My boss, Admiral DeMars, had an opportunity to review your book on Deadly PT Boat Patrols and was most impressed with the scope of your work. Since he donates his history books (he doesn’t maintain a library – doesn’t need to when his office is next to the world’s largest naval library!) he placed his copy with the Navy Dept. Library holdings and then asked if I could place the second copy in our Naval Historical Foundation Naval History Book Review Program where we have scholars review recent books and publish reviews that go out via e-mail and our web page to thousands. Hopefully we can generate interest in the book to get you some well-deserved sales! Looking through the book, I echo Adm. DeMars' thoughts on a job well done!

On behalf of Adm DeMars, thank you for thinking of us.

David F. Winkler, Ph.D.
Naval Historical Foundation

While it is not exactly a review, it does convey some good thoughts.

Allan

Best Wishes on your new book Allan, I am in hopes that sales will be brisk, it certainly looks as though a tremendous amount of work went into the making of it. When I can, I hope to purchase a copy for my own Library.....................
