» Topic: MTB RON 15 Sign
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=3539

I walked into a consignment story recently and found this:

 photo MTBRon15Sign.jpg

The store owner did not know much about this sign. It is about 13 inches in diameter.

I do not know if these an actual item from WWII or something that was created later.

Here is the backside to the sign. Nothing of note.

Gunnar,

It certainly looks like the real thing. The one I have has the dragon facing left, and I think I remember one of those posted on the old 'Message Board'. Facing left and right makes sense if they're mounted on each side of the chart house, etc. ( By the way, I've never seen a photo of a Ron 15 boat with one of these emblems visible anywhere................ that I can remember anyway ).

!3" is the same size I've got, and one noticeable thing is that 1/4" plywood it's painted on is warped. Comparing the two paint jobs, there are very minor differences. I'll post a photo.

Gunnar;
I have to agree with Steve, I looked through my RON 15 photos and have not found one showing this emblem mounted on the cabin. In the MED, only RON 22 boats and a handful of RON 29 boats seem to have mounted their Squadron emblem.

Somewhere I have seen this logo on the boats. I just can't remember where I had seen it. I have hundreds of photos, I will have to look.

I guess there is no way to know if one of these is real or not. They certainly could easily be reproduced, if you had that sort of talent.

Steve;
You are correct, 20+ years ago I made two of my own. As you can see, I hand painted them, they could be "refreshed" and corrected(which I will probably do this summer, mainly because, to me, they look a very "sub-par" , compared to my original RON 34 Emblem), but for now, they serve my purpose.

Ted,

You are correct. I purchased that one in PA. I do not think the store owner has removed the picture from the website.

Gunnar;

From what Steve has told me, there were several RON 15 Officers and crew in the Philadelphia area after the war. So, I would say you have found the real deal. Nice.

All;
Here are two PT 60 RON 3(2) originals from LT Raymond Sopher, He was Skipper of PT 60 after Lennie Thom rotated back to the states.

Frank also has an original Emblem from PT 37 RON 3(2), which has to be the only nice looking thing left of this boat.
Take care,

The plaques are mine, and I thank Ted for posting them for me. I have the original RON 37 boat plaque as well, but it is packed away. I will try to get a photo so you can see it.

I have in my possession an original Ron Emblem (plaque) approx. 10" diameter that has the two pistoled mosquito. It looks exactly like the green one you posted. My dad, Waldren Richard Fannin, was on PT 60 with Lennie Thom and later on PT 61 with Joe Atkinson. Dad was Joe's cook & 40mm gun captain & friend even after the war.

Came across a photo of the 212 boat with the Ron insignia mounted on the starboard, forward side of the cockpit.
