I was thinking maybe it is a fuel tank Vent. It looks like possibly it could be a modification made after the boat left Elco? This is based on the location being near the front end of the Dayroom (and gas tanks) being in close proximity to that area of the boat. Maybe it was to allow for an improved funnel to be used for pouring the gas into the tank with a chamois skin filter inside the funnel. Maybe using the big funnel could have blocked the vent from its normal location?
See the photo below for an idea of what I am talking about. I think CJ told me they used to do this quite regularly.

Jerry we strained all our gasoline when we were fueling from 55 gal. drums at Vella La Vella because there was so much water that got into the drums if the bungs were not tight when we rolled them off the bow of the LCT's into the water then floated them into the shore. In that big funnel there were two vertical chamois skins clamped to a steel ring that strained the fuel.

What a heck of a job C. J.. That's over 50 drums to manhandle to fill empty tanks.
Here's an inside the wing view from an image I believe of Franks. You can just see it in the image Jerry posted. I've no clue what it is. I went through dozens of fuel system drawings but no luck.

In the image Jerry posted, it looks like the day room hatch is held from the roof by a block I've never noticed before.
