Just read where Jack Gardo, one of the last surviving members of PT157 has died. He was 87 years young.

Of course, PT157 rescued Kennedy's crew in 1943.

Very sorry to hear of Jack Gardo's passing. But I can say with all sincerity that William F. Liebenow Skipper of 157 and Torpedoman, Welford West, participants in Kennedy's rescue are still with us.

Respectfully,

I spoke to Skipper Liebenow today. His reference books show that MMC/2nd class Gardo entered the US Navy in the Fall of 1943. Gardo was trained at the Great Lakes Training facility which was usually 90-days. Following this he was shipped out to New Caledonia, moved to Tulagi and then attached to RON-9 at Treasury and assigned to the PT-157. Speculation by Liebenow is that MMC Gardo was arriving at Treasury right at the time that he, Liebenow, was moving out to the Atlantic theater of Operations to join CMD Bulkeley on a new assignment.

The PT-109 was lost on the night of August 1/2 1943 while stationed out of Rendova Harbor The PT-157 rescued the surviving crew of the PT-109 on the night of August 7/8 1943.. As mentioned by Wayne in the previous post, both Skipper Liebenow and torpedoman Welford West, plank crew members of the PT-157, are still with us today and the only two remaining from the PT-157/ PT-109 from that night..
