I have always assumed that the propellers used on both the Mark VIII and Mark XIII torpedoes were made of bronze. Hence the bronze propellers on the 623 although only 3 blade instead of 4. Recently I have been told that they were made of stainless steel covered in grease making them appear black. In the color photo on page 86 in Garth's book they appear to be bronze but... So, I have come to the place where experts gather to solve my mystery before they get recalled to the paint shop. I have also noticed that one of my mufflers have split wide open. Must have taken a hit from one of those damn barges !

The are forged steel. The hubs they mount to have bronze bearings. Here is an excerpt from the torpedo manual. Jerry
