What do the classifications of crew members that have a "GM" after their name mean?

Same question for "SC"

Dick,

Pretty sure "GM" stands for Gunner's Mate, don't know offhand what "SC" means.

SC means Ships Cook, GM is Gunners Mate, MoMM is Motor Machinist Mate, RM is Radioman, QM is Quartermaster, BM is Boatswain Mate, EN is Engineman, Carp is Carpenters Mate, S is Seaman, F is Fireman.

Hi Ted,
There was no EN rate during WW2. The old Motor Machinists Mates were turned into EN's sometimes in the early 1950's. Me being a Machinist's Mate wondered what happened to all those MoMM's after the war. I guess the Navy figured Motors can either be gas or diesel and the new rate of EN = Engineman would handle both types of Internal Combustion Engines.

I noticed on the listing of men and boats for the Ron 27 that a few enlisted men were listed as "COX". Does anybody know what their function was?

i think cox was for coxwain.tjeir function was to run and steer a n auxiliarry boat like a landing barge/lcm/or boat carrying men from ship to shore or shore to ship.look up conwain and i think it will describe what i am trying to say. take care
