I've seen photos of boats in the mid build range with canted turrets, etc that have some sort of scoop or something on the top front of the engine hatch. Can anybody provide any details? You can see it on this photo on the boat in the foreground and 2 boats in the background, 490 and 491.

There seems to be a difference between the boats in the width of the engine room hatch. I've looked at drawings in Chun and Ross and do not see any reference to these "scoops" even though they show up in lots of photos.
Help!

Ed, I don't see the scoop you're talking about?

Did you notice in this picture the smoke canister? On centerline, just one at the fantail.

In the photo, at the bottom center, just aft of the port 50 cal, is the top of the engine room access trunk. At the forward top edge is a protrusion that spans the full width. That is what I'm looking for information about. Once you see it, you can see things like it on the boats in the far row too. Each looks a little different. I can find it in none of the drawings of early or late boats.
The kit has the wide, late style hatch and it has no such scoop-thing. If you look closely in the photo, the widths of the access trunk vaiers as does the width of the scoop thing.

Some smoke canisters were on center, some were on the sides. Most photos show only one per boat but your dad says the 495 had 2 located on the sides. Most seemed to carry depth charges but he says the 495 did not.

Here is the 493 boat and you can see it if you look closely.

This photo of a new boat leaving Elco also has something there.

I just figured it out. The hatch on the trunk hinges up. The thing I'm seeing is the "bottom" of an open hatch sticking up above the top of the trunk.

Absolutely right. It's a hinged appendage to control airflow into the engine room.
