how were birthdays celebrated during the war when you were in the Pacific Islands? was it even possible to know what day it was?

my dad passed on while i was there.the chaplain called me up to his tent and told me about it.we said a prayer but they would not let me go home. i was able to sack out for a couple hours and then went on regular patrol thet night/

wow - they wouldnt give you leave for your father's funeral...that is sad. I am sure your mother would have had an easier time if you had been there.
When my uncle on PT 300 died, my father, who was also in the Pacific area, was eventually given bereavement leave for a month. I often wonder how he found out about his brother's death. It is a good thing he got leave when he did as his unit was shipped out to IwoJima or some other monstrous battle while he was on leave.

so would there have been a way to notify him through the Navy that his brother was killed or would someone from home have written to him? His brother was killen on Dec 18th, the family was notified on Dev 27th or 28th - after Christmas I know, but I dont think my father knew until maybe Feb????
But wouldnt my father have been gone from the Pacific area for more than 1 month? Does one month bereavement leave include time to get from the Pacific to the east coast (PA) and then back to the Pacific?
When was iwo Jima? I have to look that up.
