I have been lucky to have a very nice collection of Dress Blue Cracker Jack tops that belonged to PT BOATERS. On them they all have either the early style PT Insignia, or the 1944 version. However I only have one summer white Cracker Jack Top. On it t has the early style PT Insignia on the left arm. I have not been able to find any other summer whites with the late style PT Insignia. In fact I can't remember seeing the 1944 style PT Insignia on the white summer top. Did they have them for that summer uniform, or did they just use the black insignia meant for the dress blues.

Officially, the PT Boat shoulder patch (the later version with the torpedo and PT) only came in the blue version. There was no summer version and winter version. Just like any other shoulder patch (Army,Navy,Air Force and USMC), it only cme in one version. That being said, there were venders selling a white version (like a lot of other thing to get money out othe sailor's pockets into theirs), but it was unauthorized.

If you look at page 71 in my MTBSTC book, you'll see a picture of a white jumper with the blue patch. I think I may have another picture in my collection.

Charlie,

Thanks I just checked that out. I wonder if that is the blue type patch we spoke about on that uniform, and not the black one for the dress blues. I have 2 PT insignia patches that are blue. Wonder if those were for the white summer uniform. Thanks Charlie.

The letter authroizing the patch indicates that it is white on a Navy Blue background. I would say the variation in shade is just a variation in manufacturer or just a fading over the years. There was no special patch/color for the whites vs blues. Just like the other patches (seabees, Amphib, Mine force), there was only one design and color.
