» Topic: 40mm ammo clips?
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=3251

Just looked at an image of a 40mm gun crew in the General Quarters thread. It looks like the 4 rounds are held just by at the rear by a stripper type clip. I s that correct? I have some Russian rounds that I got for my 1/32 scale lindberg PR rebuild with my extremely heavily modified Revell M-42 Duster Bofors 40mm gun on it. If those rounds are just held at the end then I'm set to go by placing them in some narrow H strips with one end ofthe H sanded off.

Thanks again and cheers from Peter

Thanks Jerry.

I see that the clips dont even go completely across the cartridge. I take it that it's a simple spring that holds the clip part in place agains the back of the cartridge?

Whatever it is it will be easy to fudge something that will look similar in 1/32 or 1/35 scale.

Did it matter what side the clip atrip was on when going into the gun?

Cheers from Peter

Hi Peter,
Yes it is merely a spring loaded clip that holds the shell in place. Yes it does matter what side the clips are on when feeding the automatic loading mechanism since the loading mechanism will only accept the shells with the clip on the left side. As the shells are fed by the feed pawls, the clip is stripped off and falls through a shute on the left side of the barrel (as seen from the gunners point of view) The spent clips come out right above and behind the shoulder of the guy firing the cannon (the "pointer" ) and fall to the deck.

Thanks again Jerry.

That means an in-action model will need some spent clips too. At least they won't be too hard to approximate.

Because the Lindberg kit is 1/32 scale and so was the 40mm Bofors gun I modified from the ancient Revell M-42 Duster kit I'm using the shells from the MiniArt 35073 SOVIET 45-mm SHELLS w/AMMO BOXES set for my 40mm ammo.

Cheers from Peter

Just for your info

Bronco do a lovely Bofors 40 and also some great ammo & boxes in their range including these square cans as shown in the pics above.
