DONE! Finished Photos of My Italeri 1/35 PT-109
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=3226
Fellow Modelers,
I was able to get several good overview photos, and they are below. My PT-109 took 263 hours to build over 3-1/2 months. Although I did make some modifications, I kept them to a minimum and tried to stay close to an “out of the box build”. In my opinion this kit builds into a great looking model straight out of the box. This project took a lot longer than expected, but I believe the large number of parts, and the required clean up really added to the hours. Italeri has produced a very good kit with great detail, but it is not on the same level of a Hasegawa, Tamiya or Wingnut Wings kit.
1st through 7th Image: One of the last modifications I made was using very thin styrene in place of the kit supplied photo-etch/clear cockpit windows. In the latest issue of Fine Scale Modeler magazine, this kit was built and reviewed. The reviewer stated that PT-109’s windscreen was replaced by armor plating before Kennedy assumed command. If this is true, then the modifications I made may be accurate. I hope you enjoy the photos and thanks for the support.

Well done Phillip. Thanks again for sharing your work. I know it will be helpful to those wanting to do an out of the box model.

Really nice job Phillip. I like the way she looks in the different color you chose getting away from the familiar olive tones. I also like the light weathering you did that takes her beyond the factory look but not way over the top. I enjoyed watching your build. What's next?

Hi Philip,
Since you mentioned all four top model companies, I sure like to see finished PT models made
by them on massage board for comparison.

Hi Phillip.
Nice build. I think I might get one of these for a radio controlled model.
You said, "...but it is not on the same level of a Hasegawa, Tamiya or Wingnut Wings kit". I dread to think what any of those three companies would have charge for a 1/35 scale PT boat model. I say that after looking at the cost of Tamiya's recent 1/35 scale armour kits or the 1/32 scale aircraft kits.
Even the 596 kit is a great deal when you consider that an Italeri 40mm Bofors gun is about 1/3 the cost of the entire 596 kit.
Yes, the more I see this 109 model kit built the more I think I'll get one.
Cheers from Peter

Lovely build Phillip. Quite inspiring. Once I get my PT490 finished I may have to nab one of these earlier boats.
I hope my build turns out half as nice. Actually got some good points from studying your pics as to what some of the blobs on pics of PT490 might actually be.
Thanks for sharing.

Very nice, Phil. A great-looking model, and thanks for posting photos of it.
As to the 109's plexiglass windshield, I personally think it was more likely it was painted over than replaced with armor plating, but...these types of suppositions are endless.
