Hello Guy's
Thanks for al the pic's & info you have given over the last few weeks. On how to backdate the Italeri PT596 kit.
I have know decided it's time to bite the bullet.
I've just started to build the PT174. it's going to be an interesting build with a lot of scratchbuilding. Hopfully I shall do a decent job. as I get some decent pic's I shall add a link so that you all can have a look.

Link worked for me. Good start on the kit. I thought back-dating to the 495 boat was a lot of work but, Wow, my hat is off to you. If I can be of any help, let me know. I've picked up a lot of little things along the way.
Examples:

The forward bow hatch pivots to the front on the 596 but that was to allow room for the 37mm mount. On the earlier boats, w/o the factory 37mm mount, it pivots to the rear like the other hatches.

The toe rails on the bow do not extend as far back as on earlier boats w/o the factory rocket launchers.

The port splash shield is not right for earlier boats.

The 50 cal ammo belt feeders pivot with the guns in the kit but not in real life. They would only look right for guns with barrels horizontal.

have you found that accurate armor makes a fantastic 20mm and mount that would be great on the stern of your boat> It has PE parts for the sights, shoulder bars, straps, etc.. If i can find a link I'll post it.

have you seen this gun? I there much difference in level of fidelity with the kits 20mm?

I have not seen it. The kits 20mm gun is of the type mounted forward of the cabin. The aft gun is a 40mm. The bow 20mm(s) did not have shoulder bars or sights and they were on lighter weight tripod mounts. The 20 mm in the kit reflects this style pretty well.

The early boats had the heavier, height adjustable mount, sights, foot ring, shoulder bars and straps and some had shields. If you wanted to make a new mount and bars, foot ring, straps and sights, you could use the kits single 20mm as a starting point.

I'm a little curious as to your statement about the foredeck hatches "pivoting." To "pivot " means to "turn," and I assume you meant "opening," as the hatches opened, but didn't pivot.

You state the forward hatch on the later boats (pivots) to the front because of the 37mm mount, but the rear hatch "on earlier boats" (pivots) to the rear, "like the other hatches." Actually, both foredeck hatches on early 80' Elcos opened to forward (not just the most forward one), and had "hatch catches," or "hold open devices" in front of them. The lazarette hatch, aft of the 20mm gun base on the stern, also opened to forward. The only hatch that opened to the rear was the day room canopy hatch (unless you count the forward, ported portion of the hinged engine room hatch).

Don't know when this changed -- I've seen a photo of PT 131 with both foredeck hatches opened to the rear -- but the early 80' Elcos hatches, except the day room and main engine room hatch, opened to forward.

Possibly a bad choice of words. pivot, hinge, etc. What i was saying is that if you look at photos of the real 596 boat. the hinges on the forward hatch are on the forward side. If you look at photos of earlier boats, not early boats, but earlier boats than the 596 version with the factory mounted 37mm on the new mount, etc, you will see that the forward hatch, and the hatch in front of the cabin, have their hinges on the rear side and thus the open hatch cover is on the rear of the hatch.

If i said early boats previously, my bad. I meant earlier boats. Thanks for keeping me honest.

Have been busy on the build lately. Have managed to get most of the main superstructure finnished not all glued in place yet. have started to build the new gun rails on the .50cal gun tubs. Have made some new 20mm ammo lockers as I want 1 to be open. ( italeri's wont take 3 ammo drums inside). Still working on the vent cowls, will get them made soon.
Starting to look a bit more like a PT Boat now instead of a flat board.
have added some more pic's today , hope they are ok.
I have to admit that it's being an interesting build.

just my 2 cents worth but you might, if you haven't already, given careful thought as to how you plan to paint the boat. i don't mean the scheme but how you will implement it. In my build I worked in sub-assemblies and painted them. In a couple of cases, like the mufflers, I glued them on too soon and getting the effect i wanted behind them was a PITA.

Nice work. Great attention to detail.

Yeh I'm having a good think as to painting, as I've chopped the structure about so much i've had to glue a lot of it together as I've been building. So that it retains the correct postions of the new parts. The gun tub inner parts are still loose also no window glass in place yet. I'll make the guns up & torpedo tubes without fixing in place untill most of the painting up top is done. Otherwise it's going to be interesting.
Have just started to build the 40mm tonight , as well as the mounts for the 20mm. I hope that mine looks as nice as yours once painted. You are doing a great paint job.

One other small detail. The structure to support the antenna should be box shapped on the earlier boats. Seems like it would be easy enough to frame around the rounded structure though.

Zebra stripes? I hope you have insurance as you might need theropy after all that masking! :-)
